Friendship Stars

Hello??? Anybody out there??? It’s SO darn quiet in blogland! It would be nice to say that some of you are on summer vacation, but sadly, I think you’ve abandoned your blogs. It’s that darn Instagram!!! What are you guys thinking? Quick and Easy? Hmmmm??? (And hello — a post of your instagram pictures doesn’t count — we already saw those pictures on your Instagram!!!)  Come Back. I Beseech You!!! Come Back!!! (How’s that for old English??? Begging never works — how ’bout beseeching???)  I miss your posts!

{Sigh} and Whatever.

Back to this Friendship Star subject. I had a fun surprise about two weeks ago — I got the quilter’s call that my Friendship Star quilt was finished. Yay! A quick binding and she’s ALL done. (She looks wonky on the long grass, but rest assured, she’s nice and flat and even.)

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

The quilter always does a wonderful job.  I usually give her a loose idea of what I have in mind and then she runs with it.

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

In this case, I told her 1/4″ quilting on the stars in the middle of the quilt, cross-hatching on the applique border and whatever she wanted on the other borders.  I love her choices.

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

Here’s a blurry close-up of her pretty little stitches.

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

I’ve mentioned before that some of the stars in the middle were made by the girls that were in my old Friendship Quilting group.  The stars were done probably around 1992 or 1993.  Then it took me the next 20 years to get the rest of the stars and the border done.  There are some ugly fabrics in here LOL!  (I can’t wait to see which of the fabrics that we swoon over today will be the butt-uglies of the future!)

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

I had forgotten until I was taking pictures that I put our initials in this quilt.  It’s a king-size quilt and I originally planned it for our bed.  Sadly, that plan happened back when mattresses were thinner, so it’s not quite big enough now.  It will work as a coverlet though, with a plain quilt under it.  You know, if wine and forest green are ever back in style LOL.

Thimbleanna: Friendship Star

Too bad the call didn’t come before I made my 10 Things this Summer list. I could have listed the binding as a task and then taken credit for a completed item! Oh well, a finish is a finish and I’ll take it — one less UFO!

Have a great weekend!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Love your quilt and the colors will come back in style, they always cycle through. I even love the “uglies”. I think they give the quilt character. I also must mention that I want to hold your quilter hostage for all my unquilted quilts. I need a hand quilter!!!!! I’d get so many more quilt s done…lol. Can’t wait for your visit…I’m looking forward to it.

And I am hemming bridesmaid dress #1 and then I’m off to post.

  2. Well I think you should make your list the top 11 things this summer. Also, on the blog front, I abandoned my blog shortly after giving birth to baby number 5. I don’t even have Instagram.
This is a beautiful quilt. I am so impressed with the appliqued border, that is something I would love to do… one day. By the way, I wanted to comment on your Iceland trip. I went a year ago and loved it all. I even went to the same quilt shop. I was amazed at how much art was there. My husband’s great grandparents came from Iceland and so our trip was filled with family visits. The people, the landscape and the history are truly great.

  3. Gorgeous quilt…you should count it for a ten thing finish!

Yes IG is easy, but I think blogging is here to stay…you just can’t say everything you need to say on IG. At least I will keep blogging…

  4. Is the quilt really handquilted? OMG! Such a beautiful finish!
It’s definitely quiet on the blog front. We are enjoying lovely Summer weather here, so I don’t want to waste too much time at the computer. I only visit my loyal blogfriends.
And these days everything is about Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook and the blogosphere has changed a lot since we started blogging!

  5. how lovely to finish something! I’m not blogging as I’m too busy trying to cope with melting in the heat………….. not something I’ve ever had to say before, living where I do…..

  6. Hi, sorry about my lack of blogging , I’m having a problem with writing at the minute and am finding IG easier as I don’t have to think what to say. Your quilt is lovely, reminds me of Christmas …

  7. Instagram…..what’s instagram?

Summer came to Scotland this year – well for 2 weeks a least! We have had glorious sunshine and temperatures up to 80 degrees……..here on the coast it tends to be a little cooler with some onshore winds but still glorious. That’s somewhat distracted me from work and play – lunches outside with colleagues slightly longer than we would usually take……wanting to be outside after work too! So not much achieved!

  8. The quilt is fabulous, Anna. I agree with itsjustperi – it does look a bit Christmassy. :o)

I know you know my reasons for not blogging recently. :o(

I don’t do instagram or Facebook or twitter. Between reading blogs and playing on Pinterest, the computer sucks up enough of my time as it is! :o)

  9. you’ll only find me blogging…….no where else……..people get lazy on commenting too…..then whighe about not getting comments………….leave comments and people will visit you and leave comments………….

    beautiful quilt…………

  10. LOL Anna. I totally agree with you and instagram. Many of the other social mediums have taken friends away from my quilt forum too. It’s so sad :( I haven’t left my blog, I just have a 1 yr old that is very, very clingy right now, teething and all. It’s amazing I get anything at all done, much less a blog post once a week :) Love your stars quilt! Put that on the bed, who cares if wine and green aren’t in style right now??! LOL it’s beautiful.

  11. What a beauty!! your quilter is absolutely fab. Her stitches are lovely.
I know what you mean about bloglandia – it is quiet! I think it is like this every summer, but like you I think we’re losing some people to other social media.
Enjoy your newly finished beautiful quilt

  12. Oh my, love those stars and, especially, the applique border. Beautiful!
I’m sad about all the abandoned blogs, meself. It’s like losing good friends. I know nothing of instagram (and don’t want to ;) and my hair curls up real frizzy-like over pinterest. Maybe some are just busy with rounds of guests in the summer like me. One more round then I’m done.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  13. Sigh, 8 years later I am still blogging. But that’s not really what me made click through. For some bizarre reason your pics are not showing up in the old reader. They always worked in google reader. I wonder what gives? Weird.

  14. must be the blogs you are following – the list of blogs that I follow have been pretty busy. Some of course always drop out after awhile. I haven’t tried the instagram nor twitter ect. I don’t even do facebook much! A lot on summer vacations possibly or busy with farm work in the country.
    Pretty quilts that you show.

  15. I’m still here. But it’s too hot to blog. Actually, I think I am just too lazy. Or it feels too repetitive. Or some other excuse. But still here.

Ack – the wine and forest green made me laugh. I thought the mid 90’s were trend-proof. How wrong I turned out to be.

  16. it was me, i started the trend. i abandoned my blog 3 or 4 years ago and then everyone followed, lemmings!
just for the record, SOME of us were never fond of wine and forest green.
love those little baby stitches. beautiful job.
you could give your quilt to my mother, she STILL has bad taste. lol.
okay.. i’m off to save the world.

  17. Another humdinger of a quilt – how do you do it?!! I’ve heard of Insta-gram, but really have no clue. Twelve weeks ago my mother moved back near us (after living near my sister in NJ for a year – and didn’t tell anyone what she was planning – what a story this is). Anyway, my mother is almost 91 and since her return I have been spending an average of 42-45 hours a week watching/tending/cooking, etc. for her. Of course, Frannie is thrilled to have her back. I’ll say no more, except that I’m still trying to finish my little crochet flowers for the purse I am revamping – the only item on my list of 10 things for summer.

  18. I’m still here, I just am struggling to keep everything together, so blogging is it for me. I’m just slow to post, always s-l-o-w. I do not do my own FB page, I just do my DH Larry’s for the family’s sake. When they asked me to make my own page I told them I already do his and my blog, I’d never have any sewing completions otherwise!!
…so, I guess I’m missing stuff on Instagram now, huh?
Your friendship stars are really beautiful in the appliqued border. Thank you for sharing I’m not the only one slow ~
    :-}pokey

  19. Hey Anna!!!

    Beautiful quilt!

It is funny how color trends go…we’re getting ready to paint our ‘neutral’ beige family room with the ‘new neutral’ grey.

Missed you–so glad to catch up again!

  20. Hi Anna, I’m still here and blogging away …… I haven’t gone over to the dark side of Instagram!! Love the quilt – and just think of the uglies as a little bit of quilt history ……. after all in years to coe quilt experst will be able to date it by those fabrics!
Have a great weekend, Anne x

  21. Well hello! That is exactly what I thought… I just discovered Instagram with my newly purchased Iphone. I see that is where everyone has been playing!
Your friendship star quilt is gorgeous. All of it!

  22. hooray! well done! great finish! and goodness, really hand quilted? someone does that locally?? boy if you think IG has been rough on bloggers its essentially demolished flickr! of course flick didnt help themselves with the overhaul either, huh? been a hot one this week. fingers crossed for rain and cooler weather. our garden is hanging in there, but this heat is tough! finished my picnic quilt!!

  23. OH ANNA!!!!!! I love it! Your quilter did a wonderful job, I remember making those stars…..fun times:) xo

  24. I’m still here. Instagram is NOT the same as blogging but no time to blog lately. Summer is short in Montana. Don’t want to miss a second of sunshine. And, ooo-la-la, love the finished quilt.

  25. I’m here! Don’t IG ever or FB (much) and blogged not too long ago! Go on, we’ll all close our eyes while you add it to the list! I love hand quilting!

  26. Hello?? I’m still blogging – we haven’t all gone to the dark side!! Your quilt looks lovely – and well done for finishing something……..dare I say, so old?! x

  27. I’m still here too, if only sporadically! I love Instagram, as you know, but have vowed never to use an IG pic on the blog. It drives me nuts to have to see it all again. Ok, so the blog post may have a subject that’s featured on IG but the pics will be different. There! I said it!
    Tx

  28. Beautiful, beautiful quilt. I’m sure someone down the line will be thrilled with the wine and forest quilt their grandmother made.
I haven’t abandoned blogging, but I have noticed that many of my friends have. It seems like with the advent of other forms of social media, many sharers no longer have the desire to sit and write, when they can just thumb a quick quip and snap a picture, albeit grainy, on their phone. Sigh.

  29. I’m still blogging because I really can’t be bothered to learn anything new! I’m in awe of your fabulous quilt!

  30. I agree, there needs to be more beseeching…and more blogging! (I’ll lift my game).
Yes I wonder what we will consider uglies from all the stuff of the moment.

  31. I am here, I am here! Well actually I’m on holiday, so what I mean is I’m not on Insta :-)

  32. Lovely, lovely quilt Anna. I did a swap of friendship stars too in the late 90’s. We were clever and did it with Christmas fabrics on wow backgrounds so when I pull it out for 6 weeks every year the fabrics still look contemporary. I have started that too with quilts if I make them for a wedding gift or other special occasion, Christmas will never go out of style!
And since I never blogged I know you’re not talking about me…lolol

  33. I love it finished! It’s got a lovely vintage look to it. Seriously, you can send it to me….

I guess I better get to work on my errands and housework! ;p

I prayeth that you are happy with the comments you get. I confess I keep up with your blog but almost never comment. But I am loving your blog from here in sultry Charleston, SC. Actually I am right across the bridge in Mount Pleasant but we are one big happy community. We have some great quilt shops, lovely beaches, outstanding restaurants and plenty to see: you need to imbibe in some southern hospitality. Linda

  35. linda townsend

Oops, I just reread your initial paragraph. Don’t blame the South for my lack of reading comprehension. Went to school in Pennsylvania. Linda

  36. too funny… I’m sure forest green & wine are the hot colors for next season. It’s always good to get one done. I thought the one I just finished was old, but you beat me. :)

  37. What a fun quilt! I have a 15 year old WIP in my pile, I should probably get to it.

And ohhhhh yes, I’m one of the delinquent bloggers. I try to post now and then, and comment on friend’s blogs now and then (hi!) but gosh if I just don’t love Instagram so darn much. Well, maybe I’ll blog this week….

    xo

  38. Stop by and visit my new blog! I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and would welcome “linking” up with ya.
    Val at myplvl.blogspot.com
    PS….beautiful quilt!

  39. Great quilt! I thought you would be talking about getting a quilt back from a longarmer, so I was surprised to see it was hand quilted! Lovely.
You are right, funny to think about our current color choices 20 to 50 years from now. I suppose all of the red and aquas quilt so popular right now (I am getting a little tired of that combo!) will be the green and wine of the future…hee, hee! Oh well, they are all wonderful!

  40. So your 20 year UFO beats my 11 and 12 year UFOs! I know I would be SO glad to get that one done! And you’re right….I wonder what fabrics we are all swooning over today will be tomorrow’s uglies? But no worries, quilts have a way of transcending time and trends, don’t you think? Yours is lovely, even with a few dated fabrics in the mix. Out of curiosity, how long did it take for the quilter to finish it? I’m just in awe. What must one pay to have another do that, if you don’t mind my asking? Oh well, any price would make it worth just having it done after 20 years, right? :) Congrats!

    Debbie

  41. Did I detect a little mauve in those stars too? I like the style of those middle stars. Isn’t it funny how quilt styles change? I wonder if down the road 20 years our “modern” quilts will be tossed to the thrift stores (along with crocheted afghans) by our grandchildren?

  42. Hi Anna, your quilt looks absolutely gorgeous!! And I think the “ugly” fabrics are the ones that make every quilt interesting… I even now a lady who always puts at least one “ugly” fabric in every quilt she makes :)

I laughed outloud when I read about the green and wine colors, SO NOT my type of colors but when I opened my stash drawer today I saw alot of them there hehehe!

Congratulations on starting the lopi sweater. I’m so glad you liked the dvd and I hope it is useful for you. I read your mail in the mobile phone but my password has ran out for my work email so I can’t reply there. I’ll have it fixed tomorrow. I have the same dvd and I’ve watched it several times. I really like how easy the lady is and passionate. If you’ll have any trouble just send my a line and I’ll try to help you… and please send me some picture on the way. Also, if you need more lopi of any kind, just let me know :) – Have fun at your trip,

    Berglind xoxo

  43. Your quilt is so very lovely! Beautiful applique. I’m hand quilting a wine & green one too which I started quite some time ago. Beautifully done…..

  44. Oh, she turned out lovely! Doing a bit of catchup! Yes, I’m here, and my blog has been neglected, Sometimes, events in life requires you to take time away and re-group. It has been just one of those things. Off to continue reading! Cheers!

  45. Wow, how did I get my picture to show up? Geez, now you have my face on your comment wall! I think I have Sprites messing with my computer!

  46. I love this quilt and your writing! Was so glad that it popped up on an image search that had nothing to do with quilts!
