Lisa, Sarah, and Jeni

A few weeks ago, Lisa and Sarah had a super cool giveaway and I was the lucky winner.  The prize was that I could pick any book (within reason) that I wanted from the Book Depository.  How cool and generous is that?  I’d had my eye on the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream book for a few weeks, so that’s the book I picked.

Jeni's Ice Cream

It’s really a fun book and this morning I finally got a little time to try a few recipes.  TheManoftheHouse even helped and we had some fun.  The first recipe we tried was the Salted Caramel Ice Cream.  The book says it’s their number one best seller.  I love caramel, so it sounded like a perfect fit.  The ice cream note says “Initial notes of burnt sugar give way to a mouthwatering salty-sweet balance.”  It’s really a yummy, smooth ice cream, but holy cow, is it ever salty!  I think next time I’ll cut the salt in half.  The description was right on target — you taste that burnt sugar taste first.  It’s hard to tell from the picture, but our ice cream is a little darker than Jeni’s sample, so our “burnt” might be a little more “burnt” than Jeni’s.  We were pretty careful, but I think next time I won’t cook it quite as long.  I’d definitely love to try it again.  (HERE’s the recipe, if you’d like to give it a go.)

Jeni's Ice Cream

We made a second batch and “The Darkest Chocolate Ice Cream in the World” is currently in the freezer freezing.  We’ll try that tomorrow.  This book is crammed full of recipes — some are a bit weird (Chamomile Chardonnay anyone?) but there are lots of recipes that we’ll surely attempt.  Oooh, and look…if I back the camera up a bit, you can see that the Salted Caramel matches the new kitchen wall paint.

Jeni's Ice Cream

It’s a golden carmel-y tan.  Depending on the sun, sometimes it looks gold.  And sometimes tan.  And sometimes like baby diaper poop.  But that’s a topic for another post.

Lisa and Sarah — Thank You SOOO much for the wonderful gift!  TheManoftheHouse and I are looking forward to lots more ice cream fun!  I would say something like “if you haven’t been to A Spoonful of Sugar blog you’re missing a real gem”, but I’m pretty sure  that like me, you have them at the top of your reader!

XOXO,
Anna

  2. Oh what fun! I recently saw a recipe for avocado ice cream which intrigued me… though I think it was a colour of the ice cream I liked more! :o)

I haven’t got an ice cream maker…perhaps you could test it out for me :o)

  3. It is a pleasure Anna – we are pleased you are getting lots of inspiration from your book! It is now on our wish list as well – we love icecream at our place! The salted caramel flavour looks delicious.

  6. That ice cream looks so good. I’m trying to decide if I should buy one of those nifty hand-crank Donvier ice cream makers. I’d love to try some recipes like the ones you made.

I like your wall color. I’m fond of gold.

  7. Thanks for the review – I saw this written up I think in Saveur as well….or somewhere, I am thinking I will try it as my girls are lactose intolerant, which really limits there ice cream choices!
Also – totally stole your fabric runner idea, I hosted a bridal shower with purple/white as the colour scheme, didn’t want to iron the never unwrapped, purchased 10 years ago purple table cloth, remembered you, and used alot of a half bolt of bright purple/white batik I had…..way better then the dark purple tablecloth also!
    Thanks!!!!

  8. Homemade ice cream is the best. I made a very dark chocolate peanut butter one recently. We loved it so much, I ended up making another batch!

  9. Anna, just come to Columbus and I will buy you a scoop of Jeni’s ice cream. At $4 a pop, it ain’t cheap, but she definitely has some interesting flavors. I recently had Thai spicy peanut!

  10. Ohh I have not seen this book. I iwll check it out!!Isn’t making ice cream fun xoxo Clarice-who knew ice cream would be the next big thing ;-p

  11. Mouth watering. Right here. Right now. Until I learn how to “let-out” jeans, I can not own an ice cream machine. But, oh, it looks sooo yummy.

If you are making ice cream, does that mean your kitchen is done? Just wondering.

  12. You’re so ambitious! I’d be too lazy I’m afraid to make my own ice cream! Maybe if I were more of a fan…….But I love your burnt caramel [NOT baby poop!] kitchen walls!

  13. I’m in love with salted caramel “anything.” A friend from work brought me a salted caramel treat from Starbucks one day at work, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m trying that ice cream for sure…right after I finish losing those twenty pounds I was planning to lose this summer.

  14. Sweet win, Anna! The ice cream looks fab and I love that it matches your walls. How was the Darkest of Chocolate ice cream? Such a shame that you have to try all those yummy recipes. ;)

  15. What pretty cheerful colors on your blog today. I love those scissors too!

I definitely like the aqua courthouse steps the best, but then I like aqua and red together a whole lot!

  16. I’ve been traveling so I’m just catching up on your posts. I love love love salted caramel ice cream. In fact, I just returned from San Francisco where I had not one, but two scoops of salted caramel ice cream from Bi-Rite Creamery, my favorite ice cream store. We also went to Humphrey Slocumbe but their flavors were just “too wierd” even for an adventurous eater like me. Can’t wait to hear about the chocolate in the freezer.
