Hawaii Toast

Thanks for all the love and concern for CuteNiece1 and her Blueberry.  You guys are all the sweetest.  I’ll stick another post here, so that icky wreck isn’t the first thing you see when you come for a visit!

I figure at this busy time of year we all need some easy dinners.  You know, for those nights when you’ve been out shopping all day.  Or climbing up and down the ladder decorating all day.  Or you’ve been baking all day and you don’t want to spend one more minute in the kitchen than necessary.  (Notice I said YOU in all of these scenarios — ’cause none of these activities apply to meI haven’t been doing diddly around here.  Not did. lee. squat.)

Hawaii Toast

Anyway, a little open-faced sandwich that we call Hawaii Toast* is one of our favorite quick dinners. It couldn’t be simpler to make. Turn the broiler on in your oven. The above picture shows the steps for the toast (clockwise from bottom left): Take pieces of toast and lay them out on a cookie sheet. Layer a ham slice, a pineapple ring, and a piece of mozarella cheese on top of each piece of toast. Pop the cookie sheet into the oven, on the top rack, and broil for 3 or 4 minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbly.

Hawaii Toast

Then serve with your favorite soup. Canned, of course. You’re much too tired to make homemade soup.

And then, because you’ve been busy all day and neglected the kids, they’re going to be whiney. Since TheManoftheHouse has been lounging around the office all day, leave the kids with him and head to the local watering hole for some refreshment.

SAHM Bar

(Most people think that’s some guy’s name on his bar, but you stay-at-home-mom’s know better, right?)

XOXO,
Anna

* I realize Hawaii Toast isn’t gramatically correct — it should be Hawaiian Toast.  We call it Hawaii Toast anyway.  If it bugs you, linger longer at SAHM’s until, like us, you don’t care anymore!

  1. You are HILARIOUS! Can working mums hang out at Sahm’s too?

Hawaii Toast (or Hawaiian Toast since I’m presently drinking Diet Pepsi and used to be an English teacher) would be a big hit at my house, but maybe not for supper. But what do I care? I don’t cook anyway…

  2. I was just thinking what I could serve our youngest for dinner tomorrow night since the man of the house is gone to Illinois to work. It’s usually just fend for yourself when he’s gone, but I’ve been feeling rather guilty about not making any dinner ;0 Thanks for the yummy dish!

  3. i know whats for dinner tomorrow night! i would love this meal…and the kids don’t eat anything I cook anyway!! lots of cereal for dinner around this house sadly…really, SAHM’s bar? is that local?? I don’t get out much…

  4. What a great idea. I’m going to have to try it. I love Hawaiian pizza so I know I’m going to love the Hawaii Toast. Thanks for sharing this quick, easy and yummy meal!

  5. Yes, that is also one of our favorites (fast and easy). I normally use raclette cheese, which I keep frozen until I need it as well as the toast and the ham. That way I always have something in the house for a quick meal. And by the way; we call it Toast Hawaii!!

  6. My husband hates pineapple. Maybe I could send him to Sahms before serving this and he wouldn’t notice. Or I could go and I wouldn’t care if he likes it or not. Lol.

  7. The cheese looks good, but I hate warm pineapple. There just seems to be something wrong about it.

But Charlie and Jaxon would love it!

  8. Oh my gosh, I don’t even qualify as a SAHM but I’ll be there in a flash. I haven’t even started cooking, baking or decorating. We spent 8 days in KC with most of our family , I love it but I lose 2 weekends before holiday every year…now its a flat out run until Christmas. The hawaii toast…its on tonights menu!

  9. I really laughed out loud with that SAHM Bar and Grill. What a great hang-out that would be!! Thanks for sharing (and I have no doubts that your house will be ready in time for Christmas!).

  10. That does look good and easy, thanks Anna. I will give it a try. I haven’t done any shopping all all yet, which is not like me and is not my favorite part!!! I like the cooking the baking and the decorating…

  11. Wow! Those are almost like ham and pineapple pizza without the sauce. I’m going to make them, only I’m going to add the other piece of bread and grill them. Yum!!! Have you tried the Bear Creek dried soups in a bag near the canned soups? Delicious!!!!!!

  12. What a cute post (you’re so funny!) Those look really yummy. I know I would just love them! But then my heart sank when I realized I should probably make something else to go with it (like canned soup or something.) I do like the idea of that Bear Creek soup though (from the comment above). That is good soup. I use to buy that and haven’t for years so thanks for giving me a quick and easy meal idea!!

  13. That’s my kind of food. Have you tried spreading the ham with piccalilli – yummy. The other one we like is tuna melt. Split a French baguette. Spread with tuna mayo, top with lots of grated cheddar and pop under the grill until the cheese melts (hence the name!!) I was a stay-at-home Mum – I haven’t had a proper (paid) job since 1976!!

  14. Wowsers. I never heard of no Hawaii Toast before. (See how I’m honoring it by not using my best grammar, either.) How far is SAHM’s? Can I walk there from here??

  15. Haha, Good plan to stay at SAHM’s. Love those sandwiches- we make a slightly different version, which involves dipping the complete sandwich -not toasted- into beaten eggs and then lightly frying.
We call them Sundowners. Of course they take a little more effort & if you are lazy, well, go the toasted way!

  16. Since your pot roast recipe was such a big hit around here (yum!!) I’ll have to try this one, too. We have cheese toast a lot for breakfast. Same method, but just use delicious cheddar cheese.

  17. now how come i never thought of that?!? my FAVORITE pizza is ham and pineapple (or just pineapple) … and if i spread a little spaghetti sauce (“gravy” for those East Coast Italians) on it … the pizza delivery guy could take the night off … and i wouldn’t have to give him a tip … bwah ha ha!

  18. does SAHMs stand for sad and harrased mums? I know someone who would love the toasties, he’d eat anything with pineapple in it.

  19. You should win an award for the cutest Blog Headers. And this is absolutely one of my favorites!!

Being gone for ten days has really set me back in my Christmas preparations. Therefore… feelings of stress and restless nights. But I know NOW that I can have a great Hawaii sandwich when I get up with a cup of tea! Mmmmmmmmmmm! My kind of breakfast! Off to the store with a 2 foot list… as the fridge is empty.

    December Hugs to you, Anna!

  20. Thank God your niece is ok. That car looks pretty bad. She is one lucky girl. WOW!!
That Hawaii toast……….OMGGGGG. I am going to make me some of that. I love everything on it.

  21. Wow, Anna, those are my kind of flavors. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and of course now the crazy season begins. Glad your niece is doing well…my goodness, that car is totaled! I am really looking forward to some time off.

  22. You are so fun and funny.
I love these little sandwiches. I’m going to make them for my next quilt girl party.
    love the bar name :)

  23. Yep – your blog header is simply The Best!

I’ve had my head in the sand about facing the inevitable shopping trips for the *Big day* – once youngest daughter’s b day is out the way in on Nov 26th, it all comes crashing in..

So thank you so much for Hawaii Toast – any quick fun snacks to bung under the grill to keep us all going whilst I’m a headless chicken is just what’s needed here :)

  24. Ha ha, it’s called Toast Hawaii in Germany and I always thought it was a German invention! But they put half a maraschino cherry in the middle to make it extra special. :-) Your pictures are making me hungry. We had cheese fondue tonight so I still have cheese on the brain. Mmm…cheese.

  25. I’m only a SAHM during the summer, but I’m sure that I could enjoy spending some time at SAHM’s. I’m just home from work, and I’m thinking Hawaii Toast sounds perfect, perfect, perfect. Actually, I don’t intend to get up off of my butt until supper time because my husband didn’t work today, so he has to fix dinner!!

  26. Ok, I love you and all but i cant do the square ham on a piece ofvwhitebread thing to save my life. It’s reminiscent of microwavecakeinnamug.
    You’ve been working too much.
I’ll meet you at SAHM Thursday at 7.
I’ll be the one in red shoes!

  27. Now these I must make, sounds like a great quick Saturday lunch to me with three of my favourite things all together on one (or maybe two?) slices of toast.
