Friday Five on Saturday {Again}

So, here I am, a day late with five little tidbits:
1. The Cupcake ATM.
MyDadLovesMeBestSister told me last night that she read about some woman who owned a cupcake shop and she was pregnant with middle of the night cravings and decided it would be awesome if people could get cupcakes in the middle of the night so she’s come up with a Cupcake ATM. (Yes, I know that was a run-on sentence, that was the point. To make you as breathless as I am!) That “woman” is the owner of Sprinkles and Holeeeeey Cow! What a dream!!! Cupcakes on Demand! Check out this Video:

2. Friends are Good!
I recently won a giveaway from the VERY sweet Lisa at Periwinkle. The prize was the cute Friends are Good bag, but just look at ALL the other goodies Lisa included. Lots of products from Lush. I’d heard of Lush, but didn’t know anything about them. I did a little online search and low-and-behold we have a Lush right here in town at our big mall (ha! guess that tells you how much I go to the mall.) The whole box of goodies had a heavenly smell and I’m really excited to try these products out. There’s also some tea and an adorable hand-knit egg cozy that was cradling a Cadbury egg. Was is the operative word — that yummy egg is ALL gone.  Friends ARE good — especially when they’re as lovely as Lisa.  THANK YOU Lisa!

3. iAnything
Do the iPhone apps have no bounds? I’m always finding new apps and I love it. I recently installed the countdown app and I’m counting down the days until MyDadLovesMeBestSister’s birthday — I send alerts to her hubby as “48 more days until MDLMBS gets an iPhone!” ‘Cause we need to share the Luuuv. Did you know you can tell Siri to call you whatever you want? Just tell Siri “Call Me Joe” or whatever. Siri now calls me “Your Highness” and it cracks me up every time she says it. My newest crush-app is the iHandy Level.

4.  Barter Books
The Angletopia website had a fun post this week about the story behind the Keep Calm and Carry On posters.  Here’s a fun video to watch.  I REALLLYYYY want to visit this awesome-looking bookstore!

Barter Books Website.

5.  Pinterest
Have you been following all the controversy about Pinterest?  I knew it wouldn’t be long before a great thing got all mucky.  With very few exceptions of truly original artists, I just don’t get what all the uproar is all about.  I’ve noticed that some people are preventing people from pinning images from their sites.  Which is great — it’s their site and fortunately Pinterest has provided a way to prevent pinning.  (If you want to protect your site, you can find out how here.)  I don’t get why you’d want to do that though.  Pinning means people like your stuff!  Pinterest brings you more traffic.  People come to your site who would have never even heard of you before. And as a user, I use pinterest to remember all the great ideas that I used to store in notebooks or folders on my hard drive (’cause let’s face it — if you post your stuff out there, even if you have that little pop-up window that says I can’t copy your picture, I can still get a copy of your photo).  I have a terrible memory.  So, if I can’t pin your fun ideas, and we’re not best buddies or something, I probably won’t be following your blog anymore.  Not that it would be a great loss to you, but I’m betting there are others out there that feel that way.

There’s been a ton of stuff written about this. Among it all, I found THIS quote from photographer Trey Ratcliff on opensource.com that I really like:

“When it comes to sharing your photographs online, you can go in two directions. You can put small images online, watermark them and then spend some or all of the week chasing down people that have used them inappropriately.

Or, you can be like me.

Offer up all your creations in maximum and beautiful resolution to the will of the web. The web, and the universe, has a certain flow to it. You can become one with that flow and enjoy the ride. You can let the opportunity of what-can-be motivate you rather than the more poisonous fear-of-loss.”

And with that, I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. cupcake ATM machines? oh my. i’ve died and gone to heaven. well, not really cuz in heaven you’d be my neighbor and you would clean my kitchen while i cooked for the neighborhood!
i’m off to shop. making meatballs for a gaggle today.
    have a fun weekend.
think of me while you’re doing something fun.

  2. A cupcake ATM? Not good for me. I’d have to visit it in baggy clothes, big sunglasses, and floppy hat and HOPE i don’t run into someone i know. ;p

I haven’t heard any of this about pinterest…i’ll have to go see where i can read up on the big hoopla. have an awesome weekend.

  3. Two words: Holy Crap!!! A cupcake ATM??? I’m in love! Speaking of love…Barter’s Book Store has been put on my list of must sees. I’m going to ‘pin’ the photo from their web site as a reminder of where I want to go someday:-)

  4. I have decided since I don’t have any big business to put at risk or anything to protect I’ll keep on pinning responsibly. I have bought tons of things from people I’ve seen on boards too. So I didn’t know I could get Siri to call me anything special….now what will it be since you’ve stolen my title (hmm wonder if I could have copyrighted it). And I just went and got both the apps….I am pathetic with my new toy!

  5. We are twins. I got the Sprinkles ATM link from one of my daughters who regularly visits the Sprinkles in DC. Got the Barter books link from the daughter who is living in London. I DID NOT get a goodie bag (darn) but would like one. Does that count? And I love pinterest. Why on earth would anyone put something out to the Universe if they were that worried about copyright?

  6. Just popping in to say hi and that I totally agree with you about Pinterest. I am not on it, but I will go there to search for ideas and it has led me to start reading some good blogs. If people don’t want their stuff seen, they shouldn’t put it online.

Hope everything is going well in Thimbleanna land! I am still lurking and enjoying reading what you are up to.

  7. Wow, I love this post, so many interesting things! But I really love the cupcake ATM. That is awesome and something I would have never in my wildest dreams imagined. :)

  8. A cupcake ATM sounds terrific to me. I’m not so big on candy, but cupcakes — yes! Now how many more cool things can an iPhone do? I can’t believe it!

Pinterest….I just love it, but I don’t get all the controversy. Now that I think of it….I’ve pinned a real artist’s art on my Pinterest board. I wonder if he’ll be glad for the new traffic or if he’ll be frustrated with a silly pinterest lady like me?

  9. I don’t understand the fuss about Pinterest either. What is the problem?? Nobody is taking away credit for anyone’s work, quite the opposite in fact.
I love the cupcake machine but I’m glad there isn’t one in my reach ;).

  10. Had to be a serious cup cake addict to come up with that ATM! Hilarious!

    Love the Keep Calm story….

Tried to join Pinterest but, because I’m one of the FB holdouts, I couldn’t! I won’t be bullied into it. I’ll do without instead1

  11. OMG I am in Heaven Too…Love it so much I borrowed it for my blog to share with my Cupcake blogging friends…
Thanks for sharing…hope they come here..lol
    cheers

  12. Thank you for mentioning the Pinterest controversy. This is my little happy place to see all the beautiful things that people far more talented than me create. It’s my dream board! How sad that people feel like they need to protect their ideas. There will always be copycats but I think there are more people out there loving these items and purchasing them. I can’t tell you how many blogs I’ve added to my favorites because I found them on Pinterest. If it keeps being political and snarky, I may just leave. That is not why I go there as there is enough of that in this world! And I will no longer follow blogs that get so protective. Love the photographers attitude!
I am coveting the 4S so that I can have Siri and have her call me Queen Mum.
Okay, I’m off to make cupcakes! Thanks again for the post!

  13. Your Highness. AWESOME. I will now call you by that as well. End of December is when I will be upgrading to the iPhone. I have one for work and my personal is an Android and I love the iPhone so much more!

I too have heard of the Pinterest uproar and I agree with you. Let’s just all be happy. We’re not out to get anybody. I just like creative ideas and it’s much better than bookmarking everything!

Okay, Your Highness, have a great Sunday! :)

  14. I hadn’t heard of the Pinterest uproar ….. but my view is, if you mind if people use/copy/share your photos, DON’T POST THEM!! I would hope that if anyone used my stuff they would say it’s mine …. and if they make lots of money give me a share!!
As for a cupcake atm -oh my, what next!!

  15. What lovely goodies from Lisa – she’s a good’un! Did you know Barter Books is only about 45 minutes away from me – just in case you ever visit!!! Lucy xx

  16. A cupcake ATM — I want one!! Love your comment on Pinterest. I was beginning to think I was the only one out there who is happy if people pin stuff from my blog. Pinterest is very convenient but if you don’t want your stuff out there, don’t post it. I think in this day and age it is ridiculous to think that you can put something online and it isn’t going to go everywhere. Anyway, climbing down off my soapbox.

  17. I am supposed to be juicing and cleansing this week and I don’t even want to think about cupcakes. Hmm, a count-down thingy on the iPhone. I wonder if I should download that and count down to my retirement…does it count down like a hundred gazillion years or so?

  18. Ohhh great quote about sharing photos. I do not understand the pinterest flack!! Oh my gosh, a cupcake AMT, brillant!! Clarice

  19. I like the quote about sharing photos too, isn’t that why you put them on the web to share your thoughts and ideas, and i agree if you done want to share dont put them up.

Isn’t it better to have a positive attitude than a negative and be flattered by someone liking your work. If they have manners they will give you credit.

  20. I totally agree with you on the Pinterest stuff going on. I’d be happy for someone to repin my stuff or my site. Are you kidding?? The more the better. Otherwise why even put it out there? Just keep it to yourself and don’t put it on a website or anything. I love love love Pinterst and am so addicted.
Congrats on your win. I went to a Lush store in Hawaii and it was awesome. Some great things.
    Off to Pinterst. lol

  21. lovely to see a refreshing view of pinterest, I am done with all the doom and gloom about it….

Barter Books is just down the hill from me, we go all the time, I love everything about it, from the honesty box for the tea and coffee, the ride on bugs in the childrens area and the trains around the roof. Mostly I love curling up with a book by the real fires. oh and I love the iphone app where you can make your own posters too, we have lots of fun with that! x

  22. Oh! I agree with you about Pinterest. I don’t know why Pinterest is considered as copying, after all every image is linked back to the URL it appears in.. C’mon.. if you don’t want anyone to see your blog, keep it private or don’t have one at all. sigh I hope a nice site like pinterest doesnt go down in all this controversies..

  23. Only you could come up with a post like that. So creative/engineered/whimsical. Thats our Anna! Loved the cupcake thing the best. I truly believe this is the wave of commerce future. Shelbie was telling me about drive up convenience stores much like this idea. Next there will be an ap that brings the world right to our home.

  24. Thank you for this post. Loved the videos and would love to take a trip to that bookstore! The cupcake machine reminded me of the old Horn and Hardart machines in Philly that you could buy sandwiches out of. She is a genius! I hadn’t heard of the uproar over pinterest. I just signed up and I really don’t “get it”. I have to spend more time playing with it, have just been too busy lately!

  25. What a info filled post! I’d seen the movie about the Keep Calm and Carry On poster before – but not the cupcake ATM! Wow!

I had a lovely weekend in Pittenweem and the East Neuk of Fife – lovely sun even if it was a bit windy – checked out the new knitting shop in Pittenweem, had crepes and chocolate at the Cocoa Tree, walked the beach in St Andrews….lovely! It’s looking good for 2012!

  26. Love the video – how interesting.
I just saw the Cupcake CTM on GMA this morning – I love it!!
I personally was happy to see a positive post on pinterest. I recently drank the kool=air myself.
Thanks for the MODA fabric and note ;)
    xo

  27. It’s shocking to me that people think that when they put something on the WORLD WIDE WEB, that it won’t ever end up someplace other than exactly where they posted it. Of all the crimes people commit, all the terrible things that people do in the world, people don’t think that an image they post online won’t be used somewhere else – for good or for bad? It’s like writing a book, and saying that you only want people whose names start with C to read it. Not to say that copyright violations aren’t bad – they are, but like you said, people on pinterest are pinning things they love, and that inspire them. That is a huge compliment!

  28. Love, love the cupcake ATM! Love the level app for your phone…will have to check out Lush…love the story about “Keep Calm and Carry On” (such good advice!)…not so excited about Pinterest either. My daughter in law loves it, but I’m not into it…maybe I’m just to old for all those new ideas! LOL!

  29. Ah yes, we’ve been to Barter Books. The trouble is that it’s impossible to come out without buying books… which as you may remember we don’t really need in our house. It’s not TOO far from Edinburgh…. a few hours’ drive. It’s in Alnwick, pronounced Annick, and there’s a castle with a wonderful garden there too, well worth the trip. Just saying!

  30. What fun topics! I am not sure about the cupcake ATM… it seems a tad indulgent… I say with 2 doz carrot/ginger w/cream cheese frosting on my counter currently.

  31. So glad you liked your goodies and now you can buy them to your hearts content too yeah… I think you, me, Mrs Locket and Tess should all have a meet up at Barter books and then go back to Tess’s for tea lol.

  32. Great post, Miss Thimbleanna. Pinterest. Well said! I have Siri call me Susie but I don’t like how she says it and in Downton Abbey style I think I’ll have her call me Lady Susan from now on.

  33. Your Highness ;), Thanks for posting the Keep Calm… video. I see that often on blogs and thought surely it meant something to someone, but not to me. Now it does!
