Friendship Stars

Happy Pi Day tomorrow! Are you baking any pies to celebrate? We always bring pies in to work. I’ve WAY overcooked my pecan pie (in my defense, the timer went wacko in the middle of the baking, so I had no idea how long it cooked.) And I’m making my first Banoffee Pie. All the recipes on the internet just use a can of Dulce Le Leche for the toffee part, but I found a recipe in my Sticky Chewy Messy Gooey cookbook that adds sugar and butter and vanilla to the condensed milk. And more is better, right? Here’s the toffee layer cooling — bananas and whipped cream to be added tomorrow.  (Oh, Gah!  That’s like one big jumbo piece of caramel.  I’m going to be in Sticky Chewy Messy Gooey HEAVEN!)

Banoffee Pie

Anyway, on to the Friendship Stars. Do you remember way back when Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham used to write a column for Ladies Circle Patchwork and Quilting? Here they are in the picture that always led the column.

Gwen and Joe

And see the quilt they’re quilting? When we went to Beaver Island, I saw that quilt and decided I wanted to make one. (I think it’s in one of their books, but I’ll be darned if I can find it.) I decided to get the girls in my quilt group to help me, so when it was my month to do blocks, I gave them all some fabric and they made the stars for me. That was somewhere around 1992. I put the stars all together and got started on the applique borders and then it got lost in the middle of rearing the boys.

Friendship Stars

But WooHoo! Now they’re FINALLY done. It’s embarrasing that it took 20 years, but whatever. And man, do those colors scream the 90’s or what? Those red and green borders match the wallpaper that we just tore out of the kitchen LOL.

Friendship Stars

I’m not crazy about the big plain blocks in the corners, but I didn’t have any more of the background color.  And the very last border is an add-on.  This quilt was originally sized to fit a king-sized bed, but now, matresses are being made deeper, so I felt it needed some extra fabric.  I’d love to quilt this quilt, but it’s just too darn big.  It weighs in at roughly 96″ x 108″, so I’ll happily let someone else do the quilting.

Friendship Stars

Those colors aren’t my favorites anymore, but I do love those borders. And I figure in 30 or 40 years, those colors won’t matter anyway.

It’s DONE! Yippey Skippey It’s DONE! It’s a good thing Pi Day is tomorrow, ’cause I’m going to celebrate!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. your quilt looks great and I am glad you have it together………now for the quilting and binding……..I love the colours……….our taste does change over time………

  2. Wow…congrats…that is an amazing quilt! And thanks for reminding me about pi day…I think I might just have to make pie tomorrow!

  3. Its nice. Sadly yes it’s also dated, but it feels good to be done right? I have a lot of old projects in those kinds of colors. Nice work. Very funny about the wallpaper.

  4. I planned to make pies for tomorrow to take to the Math teachers at my school. I had good intentions, really, until the slump took over. That darned slump better hit the road soon. I’m tired of being in an unmotivated stupor. However, I’m having trouble sleeping (it’s midnight here) and I’ve decided if I’m not asleep in an hour I’m getting up and baking a pie. Guess I’d better put the iPad away and see if sleep will come.

A 20-year project? That’s awesome! I have a cross-stitch picture I started for the OnlyChild about 15 or 16 years ago. It’s unlikely to ever be finished (although I might reconsider if she were to have a daughter of her own someday in the distant future).

  5. Mmmmmmmm toffee!!!! Is there chocolate involved somewhere????

Congratulations of your finish!!! I love your applique border and I am sure those colours will be back in fashion before too long!!!

  6. Congrats for finishing that UFO. It turned out absolutely beautiful. And your Banoffee pie looks good enough to dive in. I’m sure you will be very popular with your colleagues tomorrow.

  7. We are celebrating Pi at our school-the math teacher has activities set up, although I don’t think they involve actual PIE. Bummer. :) The quilt is beautiful!! :) I admire anything that takes so much work!!I bet it’s nice to have that UFO off your list, too! :)

  8. Beautiful quilt Anna and gorgeous applique, congratulations on your finish and what a wonderful family heirloom. I think I would find someone to quilt it for me too!!

  9. will you take a look at Gwen! ive never seen a pic of her so young! thanks for sharing that..and my goodness, how amazing to finish such a WIP! good for you!! your borders really are the cat’s meow anna!

  10. GREAT!!!!!!! So glad you finished the top it’s beautiful. I remember doing those blocks. I have been quilting on my red and white drunkards path and found a note that I started it in 1988. (I need to finish it. ) It is so heavy:) Can’t wait to say I am done. Have a good week. xoxo

  11. I love Pi day. It’s so fun. You’re top is beautiful, 90s colors and all! Do you think in 20 years we’ll cringe over red and aqua?

  12. Hooray for you! It’s beautiful! I love the applique in the border, which BTW, inspires me to add one to my Susan Branch log cabin quilt. I hope you have a wonderful pi day at work!!!

  13. The quilt looks beautiful! In case you didn’t know, Nat’l PIE Day is Jan. 23. There’s actually two great days to bake a pie. Who am I kidding? Any day is a great day to bake a pie!

  14. Great quilt Anna. What about a little applique in the corner block to tie it in? I didn’t bake a pie, but that doesn’t mean I can’t eat one, right? That’s why they make bakeries.

  15. Anna, your quilt is wonderful and beautiful, and I’ll bet whoever quilts it can quilt a design in those corners and they will sparkle like the rest of the quilt.

I made three pies over the weekend, so I will not be making one again any time soon. I sinned.

  16. Who needs a cupcake ATM when Pi day is celebrated at work?!! Anywho, I love that quilt. I love that it looks vintage and you will grow to love the colors again…on the quilt. not on the wallpaper. I think wallpaper should come with a ‘disclosure’. Put it up and you’ll be tired of it in a few years. ;p

  17. 20 years in the making. I thik it’s very pretty. The colors aren’t “me” but hey, who knows what I will like 20 years from now. Great finish!

  18. Congrats on very nice finish. The colors look great from this side of the computer screen…love the applique. I’m signed up at my LQS for a class on applique, I would love to use it in a border.

  19. Oh pi day, good thing I didn’t miss that. How can I squeeze a pie into my dinner plans… Hmmmmmm.
Congrats on your big finish. Someday someone will love those “vintage” fabrics! Ha :)

  20. Amazing quilt – especially the borders. I have most of a quilt top pieced from about 10 years ago, but I too think it will look dated if I ever get around to finishing it. Not that it will happen with 5, 4, and 1 year olds. I like Karen’s comment above about “vintage”. Look how many people go out of their way to get that crazy 60’s Mad Men look now?!

We’re celebrating Pi Day here chocolate cream style! I just put it up on my blog (which I’m pretty sure no one but my mom reads :-) but she likes pics of the kids).

  21. Oh my gosh – I remember making those stars! Good for you – now I need to dig out some of mine from back then that need finishing. Love the borders and actually love the quilt because after all, the stars I made were friendship stars for one of my VBFF! LOL! Kudos kiddo!

  22. Fabrics have gotten much brighter since I started quilting way back then! But your quilt is lovely, especially that border! And doesn’t it feel great to finish something that’s been hanging around for so long!

  23. Fabrics have gotten much brighter since I started quilting way back then! But your quilt is lovely, especially that border! And doesn’t it feel great to finish something that’s been hanging around for so long!

  24. HAPPY PI DAY FRIEND.
well i’m happy that your quilt is finished and i would like to make fun of you for the colors that you chose… but i seem to remember some blues and pinks and other horrid combos from my 90’s flashbacks. thanks for the nightmare memories of tole painted things in my kitchen and that awful dark green color that is probably still my friend holly’s fave color.
    does holly read your blog?
if so, just tell her i’m talking about some OTHER holly that had forest green as their all time favorite color. i’m sure a lot of *hollys* like that color!
okay, well, i hope you didn’t eat more PIE than you should have!
    good job on the WIP…
    :waves madly

  25. love the idea of PI day – never tuned into that before, but will in the future!
What years did you retreat at BI?
    I was there between 1995-1999
Love your quilt – hooray its done!

  26. Pi day, I wonder why dd and dh haven’t said anything? They are so into Pi. Lovely quilt and what a great feeling it must be! Hey, can you get that same wall paper you had in the kitchen and put it in the hall way? You could hang your quilt! ;o) Wow, you’ve been quilting a lot longer then I have. Enjoy the day and Pi! Cheers!

  27. The quilt is classic. It just screams beautiful. Nicely done. And a great finish. My only son Mason was born on Pi day. They do pies at Shelbie’s work too. I’m not a great pie baker. But if Mason had wanted one I would have made him one. He wanted ice cream cake. Whatever.

  28. Wow! That is an awesome UFO! You did it!! In fact, you are linked to one of my UFO’s as I came across your blog when I was searching for AppleCore quilts. I loved yours and I loved your blog do I’ve kept coming back to visit since then. Unfortunately the quilt has gone the way of the UFO too, and after cutting out all those giant applecores I simply can’t stand the thought of even finishing that darn thing now! Oh well, I’ll just keep visiting you instead and be tempted by yummy baking, new kitchens and other fabulous quilts!!

  29. Great quilt..I too am finishing a quilt i started in the early 90’s and its exactly the same colors my, how in vogue colors have changed. Do you think we’ll look back 20 years from now and wonder what was with all the gray?

  30. Wait, I love those colors! If you decide you can’t live with them, I’ll send my address. :) My daughter and I stopped at a diner for pie last night, but wound up splitting an Oreo cake. It was delicious!

  31. I’m clapping and cheering for your finish, it looks fabulous! Some quilts need to age, lol. Good idea to have it quilted for you. I bet it’ll be a retro treasure way in the future because of the fabrics.

  32. in the UK we write our day and month the opposite way round (day first) so we never get Pi day……. booo hoo. I could eat a slice of that banoffee right now!

  33. I’ve just worked out what pie day is…thanks Driftwood…I didn’t get it until now…and now I know why! Blooming English…why do they have to do everything backwards…dates…driving! Oh the list goes on and on!

Congrats on a fab finish! Yes the colours are very 90’s! but hey give it a hundred years or so and they will be antique! LoL

  34. I am so tickled to see your finished project! (It also gives me hope for my projects that are set aside during the raising of my wee ones).
    I LOVE the applique!!

I thought it was interesting timing about the block borders in the corner. Sue Garman just did a post on quilting in empty spaces (and applique) that might suck you in. She certainly sucks me in… I find myself making most of her quilts…

  35. Dang girl I’m behind – hope the pie day was a yummy one – this one sure looks good :). How could I miss that holiday lol. Congrats on the finish for the quilt – it’s very pretty :). Hmmmm maybe I”ll go make a pie now and celebrate a little late :)

    Hugs – Karen

  36. Oh my, your pies look so yummy!! And the quilt is gorgeous! I love the colors, and what a great accomplishment! :)

  37. Well done on finishing the quilt! Pi Day is a new one on me but if it involves eating Banoffee Pie I’m all for it:)

  38. Yippey skippey for sure…..your quilt is WONDERFUL!!!!! So fun to pull out something that has been hiding and getting it finished. Great job!!!

  39. Quilt looks great – love the design. Well done you!! Hope you enjoyed the pie/s ’cause it/they are richly deserved after that effort!

  40. Yay for finishing WIPs! It looks lovely.

I did bake for Pi day, a pecan pie. My first pecan pie, and I did a homemade crust and everything (a bit more work, but it tastes so much nicer than store bought to me). And my southern boyfriend approved (“Did you use Caro corn syrup? it has to be Caro!” haha), which was good.
