Steampunkiness

Hello Boys and Girls!  Just checking in on a slooooow week.  We’ve been trying to get back in the groove after our little vacation.  ‘Tisn’t easy!  I’m making slower than slow progress on my steampunk blocks, but I’m chugging along.  Here are six new ones.  That brings the count up to 18 finished — not even half-way yet.

I’m loving the process though so I’m taking my time.  I have my piles of fabrics in two laundry baskets — one for prints already used and one for ones that are yet to use.  I’ve duplicated a few prints already and I’m sure there will be more duplicates.  I don’t use my rotary cutter either.  I know it takes more time, but I’ve been tracing around the templates and then cutting them with scissors.  Just like quilting happened before rotary cutters.  I love cutting the pieces out while I’m watching tv.  I put my old cutting board on my lap and go to town.

So, 18 blocks finished, 12 in one state of progress or another, and 18 left to go.  I have to get going if I’m going to make my goal of all blocks finished by the end of summer.

FWIW, I’ll be counting the end of summer as the official end of summer (the autumnal equinox) — not the start of school. I can’t believe kids are starting back to school already! It feels like autumnal equinox weather around here this week — it’s been unseasonably cool. Makes you worry a bit about what winter has in store. I know it will get hot again — it always does.

Do you have any exciting plans for the weekend? I’ll be fighting the urge to interrupt the steampunk blocks and slip those Adventure Girls into the sewing queue — I’m betting the Girls will win! ;-D
Have a good weekend!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Love your new set of Steam Punk blocks. Cutting them with scissors is a great idea. I bought a small rotary cutter, but cutting arund the curves is a bit tricky.

This year’s Summer is a strange one. From cold days to a heatwave and back. Today will be warm again, but all the signs are there that Autumn is on the lurk! I always love those warmer days in September, when everything smells and colours differently!

  2. I love these blocks! And yes, I need to use the same end of summer date you are if I have any hope of finishing a few more things!

  3. Love the new block. So you cut with scissors, do you also piece by hand? And why not give in to temptation and just go for those Adventure Girls. You know you want to!

  4. I love these blocks. I too love to sit and do handwork when watching/listening to tv. I use scissors a lot too just because I can and I feel like it. Which kind of mechanical pencil is that you are using here – brand? does it use chalk lead or regular lead or both? Also where can I find the pattern for that block?

  5. Sending block LOVE your way! So, are you piecing the arcs onto the curved triangles, or are you doing like I would – appliqueing the arc pieces on top? I’m not much for curved piecing, but I do love applique!

  6. Well school does not start here until after labor day, so it is still summer here. We are enjoying lazy days. Nothing exciting but I kind of like it that way. Your quilt is going to be fab!! Clarice

  7. What fabulous fabrics and I love how the blocks are coming together. 2013 is going by so fast that it will be nearly Christmas soon. Our winter has been cold this year which I have enjoyed and then we will be slowly melting in our summer again. I am sure you will have more time once school goes back to do your quilting!

  8. What a fun pattern. I know that’s the secret to quilt success; just plugging along. Of course, I still haven’t been successful with completely one.

  9. I love your blocks!!!! I can’t wait to see this quilt finished. This is my favorite way to piece (by hand and templates). The colors of your blocks make me happy.

  10. I don’t pop in for a few days because I’ve been very busy and what happens – you sneak in two posts. Adore the fabric in the previous post, and I’m really loving your steam punk blocks (but I’m staying strong and not taking on another project!!)
Juming out of a plane – I don’t think so!!

  11. Li am working on some NY Beauty blocks that involve curve piecing and cutting with scissors are definitely the way to go for me. If it makes you feel any better, I have 5 different projects open and displayed on my design wall and quilt frame….having trouble focusing in any one for any amount of time…I want to do the all!

  12. HOnestly as if I don’t have enough on my list! Steampunk is starting to call my name. And these panels..OMG. Yep, you’ll see my on etsy soon!

  13. Great blocks! I love your varied background fabrics.

I still use templates with a pencil and cutting out with scissors most of the time. I have a fear of chopping my fingers while using a rotary cutter!

  14. I’m in love and lust for these fun blocks!
The only thing I did this weekend was take Hanna back to Miami U :(
    My summer is officially over

  15. our whole August was cool so far. No AC at night. At least my electric bill is taking a break. 90s are headed our way tomorrow for a few days. Back to summer. Love your Steampunk blocks!

  16. Love this block. Like a 60’s fall out shelter sign. Good times….ha. I am just back from vacation. I need to pull together and get going.

  17. Cute, I do like the bright colours ….. however I can’t help but be reminded of the radioactive sign. Perhaps I’ve been reading too much about world news! Sigh…. No more news for me!
