Spring Market Report 2011: The People

Sheesh — I can’t even manage to get a few market reports together this week. It’s been really busy here. My beloved Aunt Annie has been here all week and we’ve been playing and eating. She even made her famous sweet rolls today — I’m stuffed! I’m hoping to get back to a more normal this week — reading blogs and answering e-mails.

So. Spring Market. It was SOOO fun. Of course, being from Utah, I could be a little biased. I sure wish Quilts, Inc. would hold every fall market in Salt Lake and put Houston on the spring rotation. No offense to you Houston friends, but just look. Mountains. Check out this beauty —

Market

Can you top that??? That’s a shot of Mount Timpanogos from the airplane as we flew into Salt Lake City. I had big plans of hiking the back side of Timp with The Gulls, but doh! I forgot about the snow! You can hike right across that gorgeous ridge and it’s super fun.

Ok.  So, it felt like we hit the ground running.  The first few days are always all about booth set up and sample spree.  Here’s a shot of Jan at the Don’t Look Now table at sample spree.  We were only a row away from the Moda tables.  See those stacks of fat quarter packs behind her?  That’s the moda booth during set up.

Market

And this was the Moda booth after they let the crowds in.  It was cah-razy.  Like a bunch of locusts who swarmed in and cleaned all that fabric off of the tables.

Market

The day after sample spree, market starts.  We had a great location this year — we were kitty (ha!) corner from Holly and Pam Kitty Morning and Elizabeth.  Three whole days and did I get a picture?  Nooooo.  But I did have a good time asking Pam each morning if she was having a Pam Kitty Morning.  She always gave me an enthusiastic thumbs up.  Her new fabric is ADORABLE.  Pam cracked me up during clean up when I ran into her in the lobby.  She was carrying 4 chairs out to their trailer and she looked at me.  “Not a Pam Kitty Morning” she said.  Too funny!

Here’s a shot of our booth.  Kellie had five new patterns this time, so she decided to put mini-beds in the booth, as the wall space was in short supply.  I met tons of blogger friends for the first time at market, and topping the list was sweet Denice who provided props for the booth.  Denice is amazing and I was lucky enough to be able to meet her at her home, surrounded be several of her cute children.  Thanks for all of your help Denice — I really wish we’d had more time to visit!

Market

That’s the hardest part of market for me — we’re always so busy in the booth, I don’t get much time to sneak out and take pictures. And even less time to visit with friends.  Luckily, lots of blogger friends came by the booth. I loved meeting Nanette and Shelby (oh to have more time to quilt and play together!),  Kristyne, Amber, Sherri, Lori, Vanessa, Kim — and I’m sure I’m forgetting several others. Last time I forgot about Sharon. No forgetting her this time — we were stalking each other on the first day of market. And I ran into Ms. Farmhouse while I was on a coffee run for the Gulls — we’d been standing next to each other in line for a few minutes before we even realized what was going on.  And, as you’ll notice — I didn’t get any pictures of any of the above.  What a sorry excuse for a blogger!  I was so sorry to have missed the big blogger party on Saturday night — everyone said they had such a wonderful time and it would have been so fun just to have some time to visit with everyone.

Anyway, on the few moments that I managed to escape from the booth, I took a few pictures.  LOVE that giant prince charming from Tula Pink!

Market

And can someone please remind me who’s pretty booth this is?  I loved the colors.

Market

Bonnie and Camille’s booth is always so pretty.  It was super fun to see the famous polka dotted rocker back in the corner behind Camille.

Market

Sigh. Swoon. Sarah Jane — new designer for Michael Miller. More on her in a later post.

Market

The Sweetwater booth — it was hard to get a good photo as it was crowded when I was there.

Market

Riley Blake.  Oh how I want that bike!

Market

Lori’s new Sew Cherry line for Riley Blake.  Yummy!

Market

The Basic Grey booth — or, rather one of the pictures in their booth.  Their booth was swamped when I was there too — SO cute!

Market

Jan taking a picture at The Quilted Fish booth.  They had SO much cute stuff — just look at that adorable upolstered chair up front!

Market

A close up of what Jan was zooming in on — aren’t those hats adorable?

Market

I liked this quilt in the United Notions booth.  Can anyone remember the name of the company that designed this quilt?  She had a darling booth with a cute pillow that I’d really like to make.

Market

And one other booth that I failed to get a picture of — the Jillilly studio booth — it was fantastic– you can see it on her blog.  Her niece stopped in the Don’t Look Now booth and she mentioned that they were serving sorbet — I may or may not have beat her back to her booth for a little treat.  If only I’d known that The Quilted Fish was serving cupcakes on the first day LOL!!!

Sorry to have kept you for so long….next up will be the Gulls.  They were once again in fine form!!!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Finally, I’ve nearly given up on you ;)…. no, just kidding. Thanks for a lovely report with lots of fun pictures. Your booth looked sunning, as always.

  2. well…i can’t really chastise you for being sllloooowww in posting market photos since i haven’t blogged in many moons!
thanks for the fun photos, i love all of the bright, happy colors.
tell auntie anne that she is cramping your blogging relationships and she’ll have to keep her visits to a minimum, or perhaps she could schedule them with us – and upon meeting our approval, we can give her some pre-allotted time inbetween blog posts.
    :waves madly

  3. It’s a totally miserable wet and windy morning here (I had to strip off in the kitchen when I came back from my early morning walk, I was so wet!!) ……. so I was delighted to browse through all the wonderful photos – it cheered me up!!
ps – I haven’t forgotten about the Spanish sheep, they will go in a post soon!!

  4. Wow that quilt show looks absolutely amazing. How could you decide what to buy with all that gorgeous stuff around you. Glad you had fun with the gulls!

  5. Oh so pleased to be able to have visited Market vicariously through you and the Gulls. One day maybe we could both make it to Sewjourn?

  6. Sounds like an amazingly inspiring good time! Thanks for the great tour…It’s been wonderful to read about all the wonderful things on show…especially those hats! Too cute!!

  7. How fun! I think you captured the sense of how hectic it must be to be there and how much there is to see. Glad you made it back safe and sound.

  8. Looks like you had a fabulous time …… LOVE all the piccies – thanks for sharing. Oh, and that last pic – the quilt looks like one of Cori Blunt’ gawjus works – her label is “Creativity Amongst Chaos”. I just adore her designs :o).
    Hugs
    Joy :o)

  9. Wow, it is kind of overwhelming just looking at it, I can only imagine being there. How fun those. You must have been pinching yourself the whole time xoxo Clarice

  10. Shelbie’s photos of Kelly’s booth didn’t really turn out. Out of 300+ photos about 25% were kind of icky. Oh well. I got zero photos of us together. Crazy. It was so fun meeting you. I know we’d be great pals if you lived closer. I do wish we’d have had more time together. But that is the problem with market. It is impossible to do more than speed date. At least we had a few moments. I’m not down from my market high. We really had fun. Shelbie keeps me going and keeps me on the straight path. Everyone needs a Shelbie. I pray for her to find a great guy and then I realize I’m selfish and don’t want to share her. Anyway it was fun to see you and see Kelly’s quilts. I love them all. I want to know more.

  11. The picture of the booth after Tula Pink’s picture is Verna Mosquera’s! It was one of my favorites too – both for eye candy and the person behind it all. :)

Great photos! I see a few things I missed.

Must be fun to be on the other side of the table at Sample Spree … less dangerous ;)

  12. It was all so amazing. Jill Finleys was my favorite but that probably has to do with the fact that I have a huge sweet tooth! Thanks for sharing! Great photos!

  13. I’m slow on the blogging, too, and don’t even have the excellent excuses of out of town trips and charming aunts visiting. Sounds like you’ve had another good time. Good for you!

  14. Thanks for the GREAT market report, Anna! It looks like it was just amazing, I missed being there and consequently, missed you!! I just got some of Lori’s Sew Cherry fabric in, it is A.dorable!!! As soon as I saw it in person, I knew I’d have to order more of what I got and more of the prints. It’s really fab!!
How fun that your Auntie is visiting! Hope you are having a blast with her!

  15. Wonderful sensory overload. Colors and creations from so many talented people. Everyone sounds like kids in a candy shop. I don’t think I could control myself either though. Good times…good memories, always, robin

  16. hi anne!
oh, i don’t mind that it takes you longer – even better, with all those market posts at once you can’t really really relish single posts…so i’m more than looking forward to an extended quiltmarked :)
thank you so much for sharing those great snap shots – kelly’s booth looks awesome and i wish i could have been there (also to get to see tula’s booth in person *sigh*).
i wish i could help you with the quilt…i KNOW i have seen it on a blog (of the designer!) before, but i can’t remember…first i thought it could be cyndi walker of stitch studio, but i’m not sure…:)
    hugs, julia

  17. Great photos, Anna! The “gulls” booth looked fabulous. :) Looks like you had a great time!We just got Prince Charming in today. I love it! So cute. Hmmm, what can I make with it……
    Hope you’re fully recovered!

  18. It was fun sneaking up on you at Sample Spree but, I feel like I missed out on having some Thimbleanna time. I totally understand though, that you were really busy with the Gulls.

It sure was great seeing you! I hope you’re recovering and maybe next time you’re out this way we can get together for lunch and a little shopping or quilting or whatever you’d like to do.

  19. Okay I read your blog once or twice a week today I am looking at your pictures and third one down, right there in the middle me and my cousin, funny I don’t even know who we are talking to, thats the beauty of market you don’t have to know each other to work together. I am sure we were excited about some great find

  20. what an awesome tour..thanks! LOVE that giant toad…love Sarah Janes booth…WANT that bike too…love all the pics..thank YOU!!!!!

  21. I sure enjoyed seeing all of your quilt market pictures. Looked like loads of fun! :)
