March Hangover

Did you all have a nice weekend?  I had a good one — I made the trek to visit TheSecondChild and check up on him.  And cook and clean.  And do what moms do.  His freezer is now stocked to keep him happy for awhile.  I was tempted to go down there and make him come home.  He’s doing well, but I miss the little booger.  Oh, and I forgot — I fixed the fly on the boxers that I sent him for Valentine’s Day.  I’d accidentally sewn it shut.  Oops!

The trip was only marred by the awful weekend news.  It’s a six hour drive each way and I was glued to the BBC (love that satellite radio) the whole time.  Then tonight, I’ve been watching a few of the videos online.  I think we should just take March off of the calendar entirely — have a do-over and skip right to April, where there won’t be any natural disasters and spring will have sprung in the Northern Hemisphere.  Garrison Keillor definitely nailed it when he said March is like a hangover.  If March didn’t contain the first day of spring (TheSecondChild’s birthday), it would surely be my least favorite month.

QuiltBlock

Ah well, sorry it’s been so boring around here.  Too many un-exciting things going on.  I hate to leave you without a picture though, so here’s a peek at a new quilt I started a week or two ago.  I’ve made about nine blocks out of I-can’t-remember-how-many-I-need.  With the limited amount of time I have for quilting during the hangover, this project promises to take some time.

One other little picture.  It was Pi Day today at work.  Due to my weekend absence and the fact that TheManoftheHouse worked all weekend and didn’t get the groceries needed for the pie, we failed to take some pie goodness.  We’ll have to have Pi Makeup Day.  Anyway, the spread looked much like last year except for this guy who brought in these yummy salted peanut marshmallow bars and put them in the shape of the Pi symbol.  He also brought Moon Pies which I thought was pretty funny.

PiDay

Ok, I’ll stop talking now.  Hope you have a good week!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. I know what you mean when you say… “He’s doing well, but I miss the little booger.” Our youngest went off to college this year. He’s doing well too; cooks almost all his own meals and does all the other things to take care of himself. But I miss him so much there have been times when I wanted to just go pick him up and bring him home.

And yes… let’s just have a do-over and skip last week all together.

  2. Ooohhh Anna…will your quilt have RED centre blocks??? I can’t wait to see it done (and we can compare – wink wink).

I think you sewed the little booger’s fly closed accidentally on purpose hehe.

  3. Those quiltblocks look devine!

Do you really celebrate Pi Day? I didn’t even know it excisted… LOL!

I feel for the people in Japan. In spite of everything happening they keep so calm and couragous.

  4. I’m trying to imagine eating salted peanut marshmallow bars, but my taste buds are rebelling – I think I’ll pass on those! I don’t know what moon pies are – I will need to come for a visit and you can feed me all these things!

  5. Yes, I would like to pretty much skip March too. (for the most part) Love the new quilt that you are starting, can’t wait to see more. I think that my thighs would grow about an inch or so just thinking of PI day!

  6. Your Bliss quilt looks so pretty – can’t wait to see the next installment. Glad you had a wonderful weekend with the Second Child.

  7. I don’t even know what to say about the catastrophes in Japan. I too would gladly skip March.
Love the Bliss blocks you are working on.

  8. Pie day at work? What a delicious idea. Never heard of something like that before! And *grin* I didn’t pay attention to your blog header before, just now see it. Funny :-)

The quilt looks pretty with those lovely colours.

  9. March has been kind of a stinker I’d say. My heart goes out to all the people in Japan along with my prayers.
On a lighter note…I can’t wait to see this one done and I’m lol on that bottom photo.

  10. love the look of the new project.
the red and blue combo is one of my favorites – so cheerful!
so sad about the news of our Asian friends.
    The Pi treat looks yummy!

  11. I totally agree on march too but we have 4 birthdays so it’ll have to stay, a granddaughter on the 20th, a son on 21st, a granddaughter on the 25th and a daughter on the 30th. Lots o’ cake eating though so thats a good thing..oh wait we decided to do just one party…sigh. And I do like the Bliss too!

  12. Don’t get rid of March! It contains my birthday and my spring break!

I do, however, agree that satellite radio is the best!

  13. Thanks so much for the reminder to have some perspective. My youngest is just barely four months (blog post featuring squishy baby pics coming soon ;o), and it’s good to have a reminder that I need to remember how short this time is going to be.

And Anna, what fabric is that??? I absolutely ADORE those colors! Not that I can go out and buy any now (and it’s probably not available any more, with my luck), but I must. know. Please???

  14. At least you can drive to see your little boy. Our baby girl is in New York, and that’s a bit too far. A lot too far. Bummer.

I’m loving your teeny tiny little squares all sewn together. They just look happy, and you know I like happy!

  15. sorry but I just laughed out loud at the sewn fly , couldn’t help it and now the boys think I’m a bit mad. My colleagues husband was at the epicentre of the quake and she was so scared, luckily he is okay and will be coming home tomorrow… so awful. I’ve never heard of Pi day but those moon pies luck scrummy, just don’t go getting crumbs all over those lovely blocks ..

  16. hi anna!
good to hear you had a good time with your son.
i second your suggestion of skipping march & start from a fresh slate in april! the news from japan are so depressing…everytime i listen/watch/read the news i get goosbumps…adding that to a bad week at work & a short, work-laden weekend on which i couldn’t even touch my sewing machine and you have it – the march hangover…
but, oh, your new project is so sweet! i always wanted to make a postage stamp quilt…i’m looking forward to your progress (even though it will be “only” tiny steps!).
    xoxo,
    julia

  17. That Bliss fabric is beautiful every time I see it! I’m holding on to my fq bundle waiting for the perfect ‘me’ quilt! ;0

Welcome home Anna. Doesn’t make you feel so grateful to actually have a home still standing?

  18. I have to agree with you concerning the month of March and this one has been an especially hard one. On top of it all my birthday is in March and I hate getting older. This year is the big 40!Blech!

I know… I should just be happy I get to turn another year older, when so many as struggling to survive.

  19. I love that you celebrate pi day. Did you know that I have never had a Moon Pie? I live a sheltered existence, don’t I?

    Cassie

Also, love your new quilty project. And, one more thing, March makes me want to puke, too.

  20. How nice you got to visit your sone! And the thing I like about March too is that it contains the first day of spring. It can’t get here quick enough. :)

I love your quilt squares, what gorgeous colors! What size are the little squares and what is the blog size? Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.

  22. The great thing about March, in my opinion, is that it isn’t January. And the Easter holidays are coming.

This particular March, granted, has not been a good one.

  23. moon pies are the best! once upon a time, one of the guys i worked with brought me a CASE of moon pies – if we hadn’t been happily married (cough-sputter-cough) to different people at the time, i think i could have learned to love him (even if he was so short he had to stand on a box to kick a dog in the butt – not that he would have, since nice guys who buy moon pies to shut up their coworkers don’t kick dogs) because he was from the Land of Moon Pies and RC Cola, while the eXman was from … well … around Here – where people don’t know that marshmallows and chocolate are like manna from heaven … Happy Birthday to Thing 2 (i think you should have left the boxers intact – bwah ha ha ha)

  24. I am not certain how you can say things are boring when you show us that amazing fabric and you are starting a QUILT. I can say there is nothing close to that action here. I despise March. It’s always cold here and crappy. Though I will take that over tsunamis and earthquakes.

  25. Hi, Anna…

I saw myself in this post. I’ve done just what you described (many times) for my three children over the years. Especially when they were in college. They’re all three grown up now with children of their own. Well, #3 child (second son) and his precious wife are expecting their first in September. I look forward to spending a week with them in Chicago in a few weeks and helping to get the nursery ready. That will be fun.

I stay busy but my thoughts keep drifting back to the dear people of Japan and the losses they have suffered. My prayers are with them.

    Blessings,
    Dianne

  26. The blocks look wonderful, I do hope you sneak in some more sewing time. I’m so lost for words on the world wide diasters but Japan copped it real bad, the heart breaks for them.

  27. I agree the weekend news was sad, and continues to be so! I disagree about March! I feel that way about February, it’s so blah with its coldness and blahness and the pressure of Valentine’s. However, I see March as a celebration of the coming of green things. Even St. Pat’s is green! And we have a special little birthday toward the end, just as spring is beginning! I understand the hangover, I guess I get it a month earlier.

Oh what a lovely quilt you are making!! I love the reds, and it’s all so cheery. LOVE.

  28. Yes I agree…a do over for March. So many lives affected by all that has gone on..it’s just so hard to beleive. Yes we miss them badly when they are gone. I often have thought if I had only realized how much I would miss them, but makes it even more special to spend time with the “little boogers”!! Then they give you grandkiddos…WONDERFUL!!!! Love your blocks.

  29. Funny, my DH was standing in the pantry looking and I asked, what? and he said I want a piece of pie. I’ll have to remember to celebrate next year.
Your blocks are lovely! Will this be a BIG quilt? If its going to take you some time then I’m sure it will be. Wow, that’s going to be beautiful.

  30. Your blocks are beautiful. My favorite colors.

Oh, and I can’t believe I forgot PI day!!!! I haven’t missed that one in YEARS. It must have been the “off” weekend…

  31. Such sad news coming from Japan… yes, march is definitely the worst kind of hangover and then some! I love the thought of you and I both listening to the news on BBC radio
    Kimx

  32. How did you get the “toaster saying” on the pillowcases?? I’m goofy in love with it/them!!

You sewed the fly shut on your son’s boxers?? What a hoot!!

Happy St Paddy’s day!! We’re having ruebens instead of the usual cornbeef and cabbage. YUMMERS!

  33. I’m loving the quilt blocks with red in them – actually I’m loving most red fabric these days. And the pillowcases are a Hoot!
My nephew is in Japan, south of Tokyo and got no damage but I’m sure it’s already filtering down to him and his wife. They are moving back to Honolulu (I have 2 sisters that live there) on April 11 and that can’t come quick enough! Luckily he and Hiroko will be driving across the US in April so they will stop here and then we are going with the grandchildren to Hawaii on June 14 so we will be able to have long catch up times and I think it will be a good experience for the grandkids to hear about living in Japan. My poor back needs prayers to keep up with this travel but I feel blessed to see family in such a beautiful place. I’m missing you Ms Anna, oh crazy one. love and peace, robin

  34. Just got a phone call from my college boy today. It’s always good to connect. Love the quilt blocks. The colors remind me of great-Gramma’s embroidery. She insisted on stitching everything in red & turquoise.
