Forgive Me Father…

…for I have sinned.  Is that what you’re supposed to say when you’ve been naughty?  It wasn’t my fault.  I swear.  I saw these cute little cupcake pedestals somewhere and thought “Hmmmm, I could put those to good use.”  Then I promptly forgot about them.  And pretty soon, Ms. Barefoot posted about them.

Good Grief, indeed. When they popped up in that second post, I took it as a sign. Permission granted, it was meant to be, and I obediently clicked over and ordered them. If you love dishes or cupcakes or white, good luck resisting. You’re welcome. ;-)

While we’re chit-chatting about things you need, have you seen this adorable owl pattern? And fabric??? Ohmygosh…I love that ric rac, those colors, and everything about this cute pattern — and it’s free!

So.  Did you all have a good weekend?  I actually got my 9-patch quilt top all put together — as soon as I get it quilted I’ll show you.  Don’t hold your breath though — I’m terribly slow compared to so many of you at these things.  Other than sewing, we continued to reminisce about our trip to Scotland and since it was a chilly weekend, I made Bangers and Mash.  I’d never even heard of Bangers and Mash until our first trip to Scotland, but as soon as we got home I searched all over the internet for a recipe.  I found several, but they didn’t sound exactly like the version we’d had, so I put several together.  (Some of the recipes called for diced tomatoes — are tomatoes common in bangers and mash?)  Anyway, since I had to search high and low for my recipe, I’m adding it here, on my little blog, so it won’t be lost anymore.  With apologies to you vegetarians, mashed potato haters, and people who think sausages are disgusting, here’s my version:

Bangers and Mash

Bangers and Mash

1 large onion, sliced into thin rings
Several garlic cloves, roughly chopped into small chunks
Mixed herbs: 1/2 – 1 tsp each of thyme, marjoram and rosemary
6 – 8 sausages
1 14.5 oz can beef broth
1 cup of red wine
1 T demi-glace (optional)
Olive Oil
Chopped parsley for garnishing
Mashed potatoes made to your own taste

Slowly cook the onion rings on lowest heat in olive oil until they are soft. This will take about 20 minutes. Remove onions from pan and add the sausages.

Bangers and Mash

Brown them all over. Remove the sausages from the pan and add the garlic, herbs, beef broth and wine. I like to add the demi-glace if you have it — it gives the gravy a richer flavor. Stir the gravy ingredients all together, then add the onions and sausages back to the pan.

Simmer on a low heat, partially covered, for 45 minutes to an hour while the wine reduces and the onions turn a deep red color. At the end, if the gravy needs to be thickened, I mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with just a bit of water and then add that to the gravy. Cook and stir a few minutes longer until gravy thickens up.

Serve sausages on top of mashed potatoes, covered with onions and gravy. Garnish with parsley.  Yu – u – um!

Now, go forth and have a great week!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Might have to try this recipe….looks perfect for these chilly nights we’ve been having. Just don’t share any recipes for haggis!

  2. I’m thinking I might need to do some repenting too, especially if I buy them. They are calling my name and I’m trying to resist…at least until payday. LOL!

  3. Being a British girl myself, I am quite familiar with Bangers and Mash. It was a staple meal in my house when I was growing up. However, (and with all due respect) we NEVER put red wine in the gravy. That sounds like a dish for rich people, which we most definitely were not. (My mother would have drank the wine instead.)

And are you a fan of Bubble and Squeak? Would be a good use for the leftover Mash.

Anyway… those little cupcake pedestals are adorable. Apparently, cupcakes deserve to be put on a pedestal, cute little things that they are. I like the look of the pumpkin on a pedestal!

  4. Yum, that looks like a great meal for a cold night. I am not even gonna click that link, I’ve done enough damage this month already, LOL! But the owl pattern is adorable and yay for freebies!

  5. If you ever find yourself in Louisville Ky, the Irish Rover has the best bangers and mash. At least that’s what hubby says. I like their fish cakes myself. But I just might have to give your recipe a try!
Thanks for the link for the owl pattern. Cute!

  6. Those owls are DARLING! Thanks for that link.

I really thought that my son was the only one that hated mashed potatoes. Interesting to know that there are others. I think that recipe looks divine!

  7. Your bangers and mash recipe looks prety good to me! I often make a cider gravy to go with the sausages and mash – it’s a favourite meal here on chilly evenings.

  8. Anna we had bangers and mash for tea last night! He! I’ve never heard of B & M with tomatoes though – strange! Your version looks perfect – that onion gravy is making my mouth water!

Now, have you heard of a Clootie dumpling?

  9. The little cupcake stands are awesome. I’ve bookmarked the order site for future shopping as now I want some, too. That owl you linked to is precious, love that! And your recipe, my, my, it looks scrumptious. My comfort food is mashed potatoes, yummy.

  10. Those little cake stands are adorable – I can see why you were unable to pass them up! Sometimes resistance is futile…

  11. Love the cupcake stands! And your photos is fantastic! I must admit when it started to pop up on my screen I thought it was a new thimble picture. ;o) ooxx

  12. Anna, the cupcake stands are darling, A sausage would look very cute posing a top one of those cute little stands. lol

  13. You are a lifesaver… I needed a stuffed owl for DD, and now I can make one!
Can’t wait to see your quilt.

  14. dear anna!
we both are on the same wave length! i ordered the cute cupcake stands this w/e…i will put those stands next to my “patisserie” domed cake plate!
    you have the best taste!!!!
    thanks for all your help!

  15. I love those owls, esp. since they are made from Basic Grey fabric. I have an embarrassingly large stash of Basic Grey scrapbook paper and am trying to duplicate that with their fabric!

  16. Cupcake stands….so cute!!! Hmm, I think they might fall under the “absolutely necessary kitchen ware” category. Right?!? Aren’t cupcakes a necessity? They need their own pedestal to stand on so that they will not have a complex and feel that they are not as important as the high and mighty cake, which has always had it’s own pedestal!

Bangers and Mash is something I’ve never heard of, but it looks delicious. I am not prejudiced against potatos or sausages. I might have to add that to my menu plan one week! Thanks :)

  17. Okay, now I’m hungry and I WILL be trying this recipe. I love all of it!

And thank you for the link to the owl pattern. I will be making some! Maybe I’ll attempt it this weekend. We’ll see…

  18. I was also thinking about what a cute banner those pumpkins would be with a thimble sitting on top of them. Very fall-y.

  19. OMGosh! You are a naughty girl, LOL! I ♥ those adorable pedestals and I must have some! LOL! I absolutely ♥ The Victorian Trading Company, too! Oh! What to do…what to do…

  20. Ah – that old classic, bangers and mash! In Yorkshire where I grew up they would have looked at me funny if anyone had suggested putting tomatoes in the gravy! All you need are good pork sausages, loads of onions in the gravy (wine would have also been a no no!) and very buttery mash. A variation on the theme would of course have been toad in the hole (sausages and Yorkshire pudding) again served with lots of gravy.

  21. Amen sister, Amen.
I´m a sinner too. Always to greedy when I see lovely things.
    Your meal looks delightful.
I had about the same yesterday.
You know Germany is the country of bubbling beer and wonderful sausages.
I won´t do without them (lol)
    Have a nice week
    Janine

  22. What a wonderful post, the owls are so cute and I love cupcakes and dishes, that looks like a fun website to look through. And your recipe looks like major comfort food, yummy!!

  23. Wow, so much good stuff in your post! I love those little pedestals and adore the owls. I got excited when you started talking about bangers and mash because YUM, I like that dish, and then you included a recipe! AWESOME. I will let you know how they turn out. I am a big-time sausage and mashed potato fan! That’s some of my favorite comfort food there :o)

  24. Who would have ever thought it… cupcake holders for mini pumpkins! Genius!! Okay, now I must wipe the drool off of my keyboard. Those bangers and mash look way too yummy!

  25. So much temptation! I’ll resist on the cupckae stands but they are cute and perfect for the petite pumpkins. Bangers and mash, a great winter comfort food and a pub staple.

  26. OMG, it is breakfast time here and toast & vegemite just isn’t doing it for me – I WANT BANGERS & MASH!!!! yummmmmmy! guess what the kiddiwinks are getting for dinner tonight :D

  27. Since I already have a bird factory set up for the past few days in my sewing room, I was delighted to see another bird pattern—what a cute little owl!

    Bangers and mash—yum! Comfort food!

  28. Okay Missy…..
If you’re going to link to me, I guess I’d better start posting!!
I don’t think ALL sausages are disgusting, it’s just the horrible ways that YOU cook them that grosses me out, that’s all.
My kids like sausage gravy with biscuits, and breakfast pizza that has sausage on it, and i’ll take a good chicken and gouda sausage and grill it now and again, but that kielbasa crap that tastes lot hot dogs just doesn’t really do anything for me. you have to remember, my uncle was a butcher and i KNOW what’s in that stuff, and it’s not going into my mouth. it may say “all beef”, but they don’t tell you what parts, and “no byproducts” still gives a lot of leeway (sp?)… anything not good enough to sell in the shop that went to “the hot dog man” wasn’t being eaten by me, EVER… but if you want to, it’s totally cool, we’re still friends, hot dogs and all.

  29. love your little pumpkins and holders — that is a very posh bangers and mash, it’s a fave in our house as the boys love sausages ,,, yours does look yummy though

  30. You have turned into a massive enabler! Shame on you! But thank you just the same….. I love the owls and the recipe looks great. I even like the little pedestals. You are soooo not good for me!

  31. Very cute little pumpkin stands, not just for cupcakes anymore.
The bangers and mash look so good, I know mine wouldn’t taste as good as yours looks.

  32. I had a nice little visit this evening, enjoying your last few posts! Loved the hunk in his quilt/kilt! Printing out the owl pattern now! What cute little cupcake stands :-) Loved, loved, loved the monster treats! I always seem to have holiday UFO’s too! I try to remind myself that its the time we share thats most important, and the time we have to make things for sharing is the very next best thing.

  33. Those little cupcake stands are darling. Even I could put those to good use. I am sure you were meant to have them guilt-free. If you had some little glass covers for them they would be mini patissiere (how the heck do you spell that, anyway?) domes. Wouldn’t Ms. Brigette be insanely jealous of those? I know she loved your big one and got one for herself. LOL!

  34. I’ve seen that done with the white candle holders too but I keep forgetting about it. Now you’ve reminded me again. It looks so pretty.
About that recipe……….do you have to start them all of with my beloved ingredient??? I’m just sayin. Oh I’m just askin.

  35. Oh those are soooo cute, I swear you get me in more trouble :) I can very seldom find sausage I like…I can’t stand anything chewy and suspicious in there…so tell me what kind you use please because your recipe (as usual) is making my mouth water!

  36. I am trying the sausage dish toinght! I’m sure it will be a hit with my family. I love the darling pumpkin holders. I too, have a hard time resisting!

  37. I love bangers and mash, it’s one of my childhood favourites that I still make as an adult. Your gravy sounds very fancy. We just brown the onions in a frying pan and then pour in the beef stock/gravy and leave to simmer for 20 minutes while the potatoes are boiling. A good alternative to onion gravy is Heinz baked beans – yummy. The left-over mash can be made into potato cakes.
