Five on Friday

1. The teeny tiny garden was a bust this year. {Sigh} Apparently the hail storm that ate the zinnias wasn’t enough. Something’s up with the tomatoes. They’re refusing to turn red. They go from green to something close to black.  Is there some new black tomato that I don’t know about?  I’m afraid to eat them.

2.  Look at this fun skeleton fabric I picked up in New York City last week.  I thought it would be perfect for the Dr. Child, but I don’t have a clue what to do with it.  I’ll happily take suggestions if you have any!

3.  I’ve been pouring through quilt books, thinking about what I want to work on next.  I know the Steampunks aren’t done yet, but they’re getting close.  Only 6 more blocks.  I think I have an idea what I want to do, but, as always, selecting the colors is a big problem for me.  I love them all.  What to do.  What to do.

4.  When I saw the Le Creme Swiss Dots from Riley Blake, I fell in fabric love.  I think they’re perfect for applique backgrounds and light values in blocks.  I had to have them.  And then I bought too much.  So, I’ve put some in my little etsy shop.  (Speaking of which, thank you for all the Adventure Girls love — the kits are gone now, but there are a few panels left.)

5.  Thank you to Brigette for sending me a funny on Black Tomato Day.

May your weekend be full of RED tomatoes!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Scary tomatoes… .

You need to check that those bones are anatomically accurate. People used to send my (very musical) dad birthday cards with music on them and he got very annoyed because they weren’t right! Mind you, it didn’t take that much to annoy my dad… . I wish he were here now, though, as I struggle with my little bluesy piano homework. Help, Dad!

  2. Yes Anna there are tomatoes like that…. I can’t bring myself to eat them either……They are just not appetizing to me, maybe try closing your eyes before you take a bite!!! Happy Weekend to you.

  3. They Look like black tomatoes and they are delicious…dont be afraid. They taste like red tomatoes and look really nice in a salad.

  4. Yes, you can get several different varieties of ‘black’ tomato – tomatoes come in all different colours; purple, yellow, green…!

  5. Love the skeleton fabric – perhaps a cover for ipad/tablet/kindle? You could cook the tomatoes in a pasta sauce – I can eat them that way, but not raw. Have a great weekend!

  6. LOL I love the funny!!! and I did laugh out loud!!!
I live in central Kansas and our tomatoes this year have been so-so. We had rain at the beginning of the growing season then it shut off and the heat came. At least I’ve been able to can about 10 quarts! We tried a yellow cherry variety this year and it did very well! Last year we tried several heirloom tomatoes but they fizzled. Your black looks like one of the heirlooms! I’m with some of the previous postings I say close your eyes and take a bite!!!
    Love the little dot fabrics!!!!!

  7. love those polka dots! so cute.
great pile of books that first one one of my favorites will have to take it out again tonight and look at it
    have a great weekend

  8. well, well, well. glad you liked my funny i sent. hubby didn’t find it nearly as amusing!!! since i’ve been known to proclaim my ownership of a voodoo doll or two, it was quite fitting (never of him though, usually employers). yes, there are black tomatoes. did you purchase some wonderful heirloom variety and forget? maybe they mixed up your BIG BOY with a BLACK KRIM. stranger things have happened… and for the skeleton fabric, i vote for pillow cases. ooh ooh pajama bottoms. boxers – with something funny embroidered on the waistband that doctors say!!! alright, i have to go back to work, SOMEONE has to save the world….
    have a good one.

  9. ick…never seen tomatoes like that. I always said I had a black thumb, so that looks like something I would turn out…lol. Love, love the skeleton fabric and the dots. I know you will find something wonderful to do with them. Finally some cool weather in the East to energize my quilting mo-jo. I love picking new projects and especially picking colors/fabrics. Who hoo.

  10. I’ve had lots of delicious purple and “black” heirloom tomatoes here in Massachusetts that look just like that… did you buy it at a local nursery that might sell heirloom seedlings and have gotten the pots mixed up/mislabeled? That has definitely happened to me.

  11. Sorry, didn’t mean to be anonymous! just hit post too soon.

  12. I think your tomatoes are like those fancy ones you can buy in a plastic box. Eat them! How about boxer shorts made out of the skeleton fabric. Would it work for Halloween tea towels?? Or an apron?

  13. There are a bunch of black heirloom tomatoes that are very tasty. Here is a picture which just looks like yours. Just Google black tomatoes. Some folks have trouble growing heirlooms so you are doing great! Sorry, guess I couldn’t include the picture.

  14. Auntia planted a black heirloom tomato plant last year and then expected ME to cook with them – i thought they were icky to look at, but they were suh-weet to eat (with my eyes closed) – i did slip a few into some spaghetti sauce to disguise them, but then the sauce was a weird color and no one wanted to eat it – ha ha ha! it was probably a mislabeled plant … or you’re a miracle worker … once i planted a “zucchini” that was actually a cuke, not a zuke, so i went around bragging about my miraculous green thumb … nobody bought it, though….

  15. Love that skeleton fabrics – to dang cute and I know you’ll come up with something amazing to do with it – cuz that’s how you roll there sister. Hmmmm our little garden was a bust this year as well. Out of my 2 zuchinni plants I got one zuchinni lol – have you ever heard of such a thing. Usually they multiply while your looking at them. Tomato plants produced 6 tomatoes – which were red and good btw – but 6 plants for 6 tomatoes isn’t great I don’t think. I have super fantastic weekend – hope it’s full of whatever snaps your socks :).

  16. We’re having trouble with tomatoes this year, too. Our cherries are going red on the vine but splitting before they’re fully ripened. The beefsteak ones are even worse … they just rot on the vine as soon as the colour begins to ripen.

  17. Here in Kentucky we have a tomato plant similar to your tomatoes and we call them chocolate tomatoes. Ours taste like a grape tomato, only it’s just a little sweeter. Don’t be afraid to try it, you might like it, or at least I hope you do. Have a great weekend. Love seeing your steampunk quilt. I would love to make one myself.

  18. Those tomatoes look like ‘black Russian’ and are delicious, my son here in UK has grown some and I intend to next year.

  19. Your Tomatoes look like the black ones we can buy here in the supermarkets. Maybe you got that variety by mistake when you bought the seeds/seedlings??? Love the woodoo doll joke.

  20. I’ve seen black tomatoes at Trader Joes. Looked at them, but just couldn’t do it. They are probably delicious though. Didn’t you used to make your boys boxer shorts? Or how about a manly grilling apron? Whatever project you choose next, we’ll be waiting to see it! Love the Swiss Dots and the joke. Enjoy the cooler weather and weekend!

  21. That looks like a Black Krim. They don’t have the green shoulders that Cherokee Purple have. They are our FAVORITE!!! Try them…you might like them. Or you could send them my way. I can’t wait to see which quilt project you start next.

  22. How about making the tomatoes into chutney? Are you sure they’re not supposed to look that way?? Good luck with your next quilt decision…..I’m in that dilemma too – but there are so many to finish!!

  23. We bought seeds to grow tomatoes just like those this year but, somehow, we didn’t sow them. I’d say go for it! I bet they taste yummy! :o)

  24. I have some tomatoes that look like that. I think they’re called Cherokee Purples. I haven’t, however, gotten to try them because our beagle likes to pick them and toss them around the yard. He’s lucky he’s cute!

  25. love that cartoon! so funny :)
I just saw that fabric a couple of weeks ago, and it is awesome.
black tomatoes….how did they taste? Mine usually aren’t black until I add the balsamic.

  26. Finally catching up on all my blog reading! There are a wide variety of tomatoes-seen cherry sized this color! Hope they were good (as I continue catching up I bet I get an update! ;)) Your sewing and knitting is so inspiring… Now, if only you could pass along the patience and steady hands it takes to do those! :)

Also, your comment on my blog about your bees made me so sad. I dislike that neighbor just for it. :( I have considered having my own bees, but, as you pointed out, they spray for mosquitos here too…

  27. If I liked to sew, I’d make me one of those pincushions! Re: black tomatoes – they look dark purple to me! lol Maybe they are sort of like blue potatoes, the kind they serve on Jet Blue! Instead of fried green tomatoes you can have purple fried tomatoes. They could be a hybrid, a cross with your zinnias? Can you eat Zinnias? Hum…. not up to date on the edible flowers. Well, enjoy!
