Birds in the Air

Snow!  We’ve had so much beautiful snow in the last week and I didn’t want it to pass without a little record here on ye ol’ blog.  I heard that this was the most snow we’ve had on the ground at one time since 1982.  If you’ve been around here for very long, you probably know I LOVE snow, so I’ve been in heaven.

I’ve seen lots of fun pictures of quilts in snow and I’ve always wanted to take a photo of one of my freshly made quilts in the snow.  Sadly, I don’t have a freshly made quilt, and by the time I do the snow will all be gone (it’s fading fast boo-hoo), so I decided to take photos of an old antique quilt that recently came back from the quilter.

I’ve been putting the binding on, so at least the binding is something freshly sewn by me LOL.  I actually put this quilt on the quilt frame several years ago in hopes that MeMum would start quilting again.  I quilted the first two blocks (those two in the corner in the above picture) but MeMum just wasn’t interested.  It didn’t take me long to realize that, with all my other projects, I’d be dead before I finished quilting this quilt, so I took it off the frame and sent it to our hand-quilter. Didn’t she do a beautiful job?

The original quilter used two different red and brown prints in this quilt.  She must have not had enough of either print to use for the whole quilt — that’s just one thing I love about this quilt.  It’s all hand pieced and her piecing is amazing — look at all those matching points!

I’m guessing the top was made in the early 20th century.  It’s really fun to sit and look at all the different fabrics.  Look at that Electric Green!  And several blocks have some of those famous old bubble gum pink prints.

We backed this quilt with a reproduction brown print that came from MeMum’s stash.  It was a good choice, ’cause even though it’s a print, you can still very clearly see the quilting on the back.

So, those are my quilt pictures in the snow!  I should plan my quilts better so that they coincide with snow storms.  Some years (like last year) we barely have any snow though, so it’s a hard game to play.

And speaking of games, we have had a great time playing in the snow this year.  There have been snowmen and snow angels and even a little sledding.  Both downhill and dragging babies around on a frozen lake.  So.  Much.  Fun!

Happy End of February — Spring is just around the corner!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. Such a beautiful quilt Anna. How did you come by it? And I’m curious to know who your hand quilter is. I hear rain is forecasted for tomorrow.

  2. OMG, that is just gorgeous. Where did you find that beautiful top? I can’t believe what good shape it is in. Lucky you! I have 2 quilts made in the 1930s by my grandmother and others in her sewing bee. One is in pretty good shape. The other is thread bare. Both were heavily used. I just love them.

Sledding looks fun…the girls are all smiles. ;p Stay warm.

  3. Beautiful quilt! Our snow is almost gone here in the Mitt and today the high was 54! What’s the next project in the sewing dept?

  4. Brrrr, I am not a snow lover. A move from Mississippi to Connecticut in 2nd grade with two snowbound Easters did me in. And driving in it… But your quilt photos in snow are magic. Sigh. How did you hang the gorgeous quilt on the branch with no visible foot prints disturbing the snow? Cropping prowess? And the grand girls are having great fun! I bet your DDIL captured a look of glowing happiness on their sweet faces.

  5. Awe lovely and so fun. Great pictures. You and I have a lot in common, except you have more fabric and skills! haha

  6. Oh what a gorgeous quilt! (You know how I love red.) What a fantastic antique find, and mixed with new and old stitching, hands, fabric, love. Glad you’re having fun in the snow. :) Unlike everyone else, we haven’t had any big snows in Colorado this year!! Glad to see you got out with your little ones to enjoy it. ;)

  7. Such a beautiful post! A wonderful quilt and lots of snow too! I enjoyed seeing the hand quilting and the rich warm colours of your antique quilt and reading about it too. Happy March Anna! Xxx

  8. Oooh, I’ve done that border! It almost makes me feel like a proper quilter… What a lovely quilt.

A frozen lake? And you put your babies on it?? We never get anything frozen enough for that!

  9. I LOVE the quilt! The colors are so rich. I have discovered quilting in my mid-seventies! Early in my life I was a busy wife, mother and nurse. Now, there’s time and I love fabric and quilting. I have such a “stash” now, I’m not sure I’ll live long enough to use it all but I will try! ;-)

  10. What a lot of pretty photos, and a truly magnificent quilt! The hand quilting is wonderful. Sorry, it is not something I would ever attempt, but I do enjoy seeing others’ beautiful work. I know you love the cold and the snow. I do not. It just doesn’t seem right the amount of cold and even snow we had here lately. For crying out loud – this is HOUSTON!

  11. Such a beautiful quilt! I love the snow photo’s! We’ve had quite some snow in a few days time early February, but the next week we had temperatures of 18oC! Have a wonderful weekend Anna!!
