Quilted Happy Flowers

Well, Happy New Year came and went and, canyoubelieveit, we’re more than half-way through January already!  How’s it going out there?  My January didn’t start off as planned.  I thought it would be a nice quiet, clean-your-closets kind of month — hopefully one with lots of snow and beautiful scenes out the window while I was working inside the house.  We did get started on a big clean out of our master bedroom closet.  A job that should have taken 2, or maaaayyyybe 3 days if we took our time and enjoyed the process.  But then, I screwed it up.

I ran over my foot with the car.  All by myself.  I told my son that the radiologist said “it’s not uncommon.”  But then he corrected me and, what the radiologist actually said was “it’s not unheard of.”  So fine.  And, we like to be helpful and share here, so,  I’ll tell you how I did it.  Mostly so you don’t slip up and do the same thing LOL.  I was in my car talking to TheFirstChild on the phone and pulled up to our mailbox to collect the mail.  Normally, I have to put the car in park and jump out of the car to collect the mail.  But I wasn’t done talking to TheFirstChild, so I sat there for a little bit to finish the conversation.  When I hung up, I opened the car door, put my left foot out on the pavement and then took my right foot off of the brake.  But, I hadn’t put the car in park.  By that point, I had shifted my weight to my left leg, so, as the car started forward, I fell out onto the pavement.  At which time, my right foot rolled into the path of the car.  Luckily (or not), I realized the car was now heading down the street, so I had to jump up and run after it.  I managed to jump in and save the car from going down a hill and ending up in a heap somewhere.  By now, I know you’re probably chuckling at least a little bit, and, 10 days later, I am too.  I kind of wish I had a video of the whole event.  You know, for those times when the family is sitting around, “Hey, remember when Grandma ran over her foot?”  I immediately called TheFirstChild back and he rushed over to assess the situation.  The very worst part of the whole experience was that he made me put my poor throbbing foot in ice water for 2 hours.  Ouch, Ouch, Ouch — that really hurt.  After the swelling went down a little, he sent me for an x-ray, and fortunately, nothing was broken, which was really lucky.

So, I’ve been lame for awhile and not really able to do a whole lot.  I’m just starting to be able to walk around without limping.  There’s still some swelling and bruising and I’m sure it will still be sore for awhile longer, but it could have been a whole lot worse.  But, silver lining — there’s been lots of knitting and a little stitching.  Here’s proof:

Thimbleanna: Happy Flower Quilt

I finally got the binding done on my Happy Flowers quilt!  It looks a little crooked in the picture, but it’s really not.  My hand-quilter had it for about a year and she did a beautiful job on the quilting.  Here are a few of the blocks — she quilted them all differently.

I backed the quilt in the cute little Japanese cheater print by Atsuko Matsuyama and the binding is another Atsuko Matsuyama print with flowers and the cutest little deer.

So, all has not been lost with my January. One step forward, two steps back LOL. We’re still working on the master closet, but we’re getting there. If only it would snow a little so I could feel better about being cooped up in the house cleaning!

Happy January — and remember, Put Your Car In Park When You Stop!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. LOL – you had us both laughing here I had to read this to my husband – he said it kind of sounded like that song “Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer” I know it must have been panic time seeing your car roll away from you too – glad you caught it without injuring yourself more!

  2. You ARE! lucky! Goodness, I feel so bad for you! I kind of know, since I broke my ankle 1 year ago! Grrr it was soooo bad! 2 surgeries later I’m doing alright. Sure there is still stiffness and swelling…but ahhhh so glad you aren’t hurt more.

  3. Oh you poor thing! But to be honest, I did have a little chuckle, mostly because you tell the story so well. But I hope your poor foot is getting better and it doesn’t hurt anymore. No snow here either at least not where we live. And your Happy Flowers quilt is just that, happy!

  4. At least you can see the funny side, it will be a good story in years to come, but I hope you are able to get around more soon. About 15 years ago, I broke my right foot when I tripped on uneven sidewalk in the dark while walking our new puppy. I had a cast for 6 weeks then had to have physical therapy because the muscles had atrophied a bit while I was laid up watching tons of Netflix. I’m telling you this just in case you don’t pop back to normal overnight, you may want to consider a few sessions of PT to get your balance back.

  5. Yikes, I hope that are past worst part of the injury. Such an easy mistake to make. When I was in high school burnt my lips with my curling iron, It was an accident that required explanation. I was curling my hair, I was running late. My friend that was giving me ride showed up, honked. I panicked, dropped the curling iron, tried to grab it – the hot iron hit my mouth. Hence the burnt lips….

  6. Oh Anna, only you could take an awful mishap and turn it into a laugh for us! I can picture the whole scene and am so glad you are not worse off. It must have been something to see ??

  7. Gorgeous quilt! I love your attention to detail. And how handy to have a son who is a doctor! So sorry about your foot. It’s no fun to be kept from doing what you want. Take care of yourself!

  8. I didn’t laugh when I read your story of running over your foot as that sounds painful. I do have to say that it made me laugh when I pictured you jumping up and running down the street after the car. Isn’t it nice having a doctor in the family that you can call on? The way I look at it when I don’t get things done as planned is that it will still be there when I get to it. Your quilt turned out beautiful.

  9. First of all I’m so glad you are ok and how amazing nothing was broken…though it must have been a painful injury. Second…how well you write and describe things…your escapade was very amusingly told!! And third….your beautiful quilt….how pretty it looks and what a great achievement. Hope you are soon fully healed. Hugs XXX

  10. Miss Thimble, I hope your foot is getting better by the day. Goodness sake!
I absolutely LOVE this flower quilt! Will it stay with you or does it have someone else’s name on it?

  11. Phew, so glad you dodged broken bones, and in a way, an unthankful project (but unfortunately… the closet is still there…). The quilt is absolutely gorgeous! Many wonderful naps could happen under this one! Take it easy, and heal!

  12. Oh my! Your poor poor foot! I am so glad nothing was broken, but I’m sure it hurt like the devil.
Your sweet quilt is wonderful and hooray for hand quilting! I love all the charming details. It will be a family heirloom for sure.

  13. I’m sorry, but this adventure did make me laugh and reminded me of when my girlfriend ran over both of my hands. We still tell that story 41 years later so I’m sure you will live with your story forever, too. She, of course, doesn’t want it repeated but we tell it anyway!
I love the quilt. I’m glad you showed close ups just so I could see that some of the squares are bordered with the pink and some are not, giving it that charming wonky look.
Now, go put your foot up!

  14. Oh dear, I am sorry to hear about your foot… but the story did make me chuckle! Easily done I should imagine. Hope it mends soon. Such a pretty quilt!

  15. Goodness, I didn’t laugh. How terrible! Luckily we don’t have mailboxes in Britain (or, rarely) and we mainly don’t drive automatics so…

Your quilt is lovely. But.. a year?? Even I don’t take that long!

    Look after that foot!

  16. Oh Anna!! I couldn’t work out how you’d done that but now I understand. You’ll be paranoid about the hand brake now!! Love your Happy Flowers – such a pretty finish. Well done to you and the hand quilter. Please take care xx

  17. Oh dear! You really did start off the year with a bang! I’m happy you’re on the mend, dear Thimbleanna :) I send you hugs from Ohio!! And, as always, I admire and envy your sewing talents! :)

  18. Goodness! Good grief. Thanks for the warning, I could totally see that happening to me. So glad you’re on the mend and have this gorgeous quilt to comfort you. Wow! I love it.
