Steampunk

Well, I’m having a slow start to my 10 Things this Summer list. For the quilt block entry (#8), I have made a little progress.

Brigette and I saw the Steampunk quilt at market and knew we wanted to make it.

And then we saw this black and yellow quilt in the Busy Bee Quilt Designs booth.

So, we thought it might be fun to make the Steampunk quilt in the black and yellow colors.  Plus some gray.

And, like the Busy Bee quilt, some touches of red.  Berglind gave me the two fabrics below and they’re just perfect for this color scheme.  (Thank you Berglind!)

I’ve noticed that the Busy Bee quilt also has some browns, so I’ll have to work on that too.

It’s been slow-going for me, but I’m having fun selecting fabric combinations.

Thimbleanna: Steampunk

This is a REALLY fun quilt to watch at the blocks come together.

Thimbleanna: Steampunk

The pattern is by Jen Kingwell (I LOVE her quilts!) and I’ve just discovered that there’s a flickr quilt group to boot. And too funny — I just clicked over there and saw that my old blog friend Nicolette is also making this quilt. You must go see her blocks — they’re beautiful!

And, I apologize in advance, if you get lost in the all of the internet steampunk blocks!
XOXO,
Anna

  1. This is too funny!!
Ohhhh, I would have loved to see that booth and drool over Jennifer‘s quilts!
Love your blocks and the colour palette you work with! Thanks for your kind words!
Do you work with the acrylic templates?

  2. Oh I am so ignoring Steampunk! But as usual you sucked me into looking at some websites and off I went to find Jen’s pattern “What color is an elephant.” It’s on it’s way to me now along with some older Heather Ross yardage the shop happened to have, frogs on lily pads, who could resist?

  3. I love these blocks guess its time I give in and buy this pattern. Would be fun choosing fabrics for each block.
Thanks love the pictures from market

  4. Great Steampunk blocks! They look really fantastic, especially the bee one. I know you love bees and was thinking of you when I watched the movie/documentary “Not just Honey”. If you can get your hands on it, I’m sure you would enjoy it too.
Hope you are having a great weekend.
PS: also love the new look of your blog.

  5. Oh thanks, now I have to put this on my list of quilts to do :) Love the blocks!!! I’m heading to check your links.

  6. Oh the temptation of the steampunk quilt! Love the blocks in your colourway and love anything Jen Kingwell really. I’m off to take a squiz at Nicolette’s blocks.

  7. And here I am, still struggling along, trying to finish all my UFOs. New projects are the most fun, but I’m not allowed. By me. That’s going to be one beautiful quilt! And do you mean crazy California Brigitta??

  8. I really love your fabric combinations. They are so refreshing – like the first hint of autumn. Not that I’m rushing it.

  9. I love the quilts! I think you must have the same energy my daughter does (see my last blog post). Quilts always bring back so many memories and make me want to start back quilting. Right now, I am busy sewing for grandchildren! ;-)

  10. You’re always amazing. I can’t believe how many projects you accomplish every year. I suppose I must get up off the couch to get any of my summer “list” completed. Yesterday, I did hang a picture, does that count??

  11. Man Anna…I just finished a quilt top with curves and swore it would be a long time before I did another, but you are making me want to do this one! It’s awesome!

  12. I would love to make this quilt Anna. I love how you used the Guðrún Erla’s fabrics, fits perfectly. Is Steampunk hard to make or is it easier than it looks? I love that you can join a Steampunk Flickr group, so much fun to see how others are making it :)

  13. Your blocks are perfect Anna! I’ve never heard of the steampunk pattern before now, but I love it. I especially love it in the Jen Kingwell Designs booth. I would have been drooling! Can’t wait to see your interpretation of it.

  14. I had never heard of this pattern either but now I’m hooked. I’ve got several different collections of Denyse Schmidt that I bought from a gal on Ebay. About 100 pieces of 9″ x 11″. I’m thinking this is the perfect pattern to use them on. Also bought the plastic templates for the pattern off that gal on Etsy. I’m pumped!
