The Ghastlies

Blogged aboutĀ HERE.

Pattern:

  • This quilt was created by piecing 20 wonky log cabin blocks and sewing them together, 4 blocks across and 5 blocks down.
  • Each finished block measures 14″ and the quilt measures 56″ wide by 70″ long.
  • A wonkey log cabin tutorial can be foundĀ HERE.
  • Finished December 2010.

Materials:

  • The centers of each block are fussy cut from “the ghastlies” by Alexander Henry. 3/4ths of a yard of fabric should provide enough block centers, depending on how carefully you fussy cut.
  • Various scraps of black, orange and gray fabrics. I didn’t keep track of yardage, but there is a fair bit of waste in this method of wonky construction. I would guess that I easily used 3 or 4 yards of halloween fabrics.
  • Quilt Backing. Four yards will allow for a back with just one long seam, plus a leftover piece of fabric that measures approximately 14″ wide by 72″ long. If the backing fabric is a Ghastlie fabric, you could cut some of the vignettes for the front of the quilt from this extra piece.
  • Quilt Batting. 56″ x 70″

Update: When I made these quilts, “the ghastlies” was the only main ghastlie fabric available. Alexander Henry has since come out with a new print, “a ghastlie night” which contains my favorite vignette, the knitting witches. The vignettes in “a ghastlie night” do not cut apart as easily as the ones in “the ghastlies”, plus, “the ghastlies” have at least 7 vignettes, while “a ghastlie night” only has three or four, depending on how you cut it.
If I were to make these quilts again, I’d buy 3/4 yard of “the ghastlies” for the vignettes in the center of the blocks, and 4 yards of “a ghastlie night” for the back. There will be enough “a ghastlie night” fabric left over for a few vignettes (those knitters!) to be added to the front of the quilt.

Additional Info:

When I constructed the blocks, I made sure that the last round of each block was sewn from the same gray fabric (Moda Bella 9900 128 — Stone). That way, when the blocks are all sewn together, it looks like they’re floating on a background of gray.

Gift?

  • Nope, just for me.
