Pie Day

I know that we usually say that pie day is 3.14, but here in ThimbleannaLand, Pie Day is today.  (Well, it waaas today, but now it’s yesterday ’cause tech support and I had a little overnight session trying to view my pictures, but we’re not talking about that.  Just pretend it was today.  ThankYouVeryMuch.)

Thanksgiving Pies

(The Keep Calm part is especially important given all the website problems here in the last week!)  Anyway, I’ve spent the day (yesterday, ahem) baking our usual pies for Thanksgiving. Apple, pecan, pumpkin and this year, I’ve added pumpkin praline.

Thanksgiving Pies

A friend at work suggested it. You take your favorite pumpkin pie recipe, but before you add the pumpkin filling, you spread a praline layer (1/3 c. chopped pecans, 1/3 c. brown sugar, and 2 Tbsp. soft butter mixed together) on the pie shell and bake it at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Then remove it from the oven, pour the pumpkin mixture on top and bake like you normally would for your pumpkin pie. The hot praline layer under the pumpkin mixture causes little air bubbles to come to the top of the pie, but that doesn’t really matter. I’m betting it will still taste good.

Thanksgiving Pies

I also had fun with my little Williams-Sonoma pie crust shapes again this year — I love those things!  (Btw, I added the little acorns on the pumpkin-praline pie after the praline layer was baked — otherwise, they’d be burned.)

Thanksgiving Pies

I ran across this Pies That Kill article this morning. Whew! None of these pies are from any of those sources — I’m thinking we’ve dodged a bullet. Homemade pies are low calorie — right?

Wishing a Very Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the US!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. Oh I’m all about the pie this year.. and LOVE The keep calm.. I have the red original wording in my kitchen! Which seem appropriate for those that know me!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Lovely pies – if only I could pop in for a slice! Of course homemade pies are healthy ….. and all the work making them works off all the calories in advance. If they contain fruit or vegetables then they count as part of our ‘five portions a day’ (a govt initiative to get us to eat more fruit & veggies). I hope you have a wonderful day with your family, love Anne

  3. I have an apple pie baked, a banana cream in the refrigerator and pumpkin pie baking up at Dad’s house. I just looked at the Pies That Kill website. Talk about sucking all the joy out of eating a slice of heaven! Gee whiz. :(
Hope you have had a lovely day- today!

  4. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving Anna!! Your pies look amazing – the hard part would be deciding which one to eat! I love the little pie crust shapes – a cute finishing touch.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to you! Your pies look just delicious. We had chocolate almond cheesecake here and I’m sending the rest back to college with our daughter because I can’t eat another bite!

  6. Anna, I had the best first Thanksgiving. Pumpkin and Apple pie where we were, but I am going to make a pecan pie before I leave this country! I love your keep calm sign.
I made ‘lamingtons’ to add to our table- you can google them!

  7. Ohhh! I love the sound of that praline pumpkin pie! My only foray into pie adventure land involves tossing a handful of chocolate chips into the pecan pie before baking…Without a fleet of kitchen elves at your beck and call, how do you have the time to do all those fancy [very cute!] shapes for the rim of your pies?? Just curious……Hope you had a great pie/turkey day!

  8. OHHHHHHHH Anna your pies are picture perfect, so pretty. Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday. All of my family came here, it was a lot of work but so worth it. I feel very blessed. Love ya

  9. yum – pecan is my favorite and I love idea of the praline layer in the pumpkin. This year, andrew and I made our own homemade gingersnap cookie crust for our pumpkin – decadent!

  10. The pies look extra yummy and I’m sure they were gobbled right up. I just finished a piece of apple pie while I’ve been reading a few blogs. Yummy!!!

Hey, I loved the little pie shapes and will have to look into buying them for my sister. She makes a mean apple pie. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones.

  11. being Australian, I have never quite come to understand how someone can enjoy pumpkin, in a pie? But then again, i don’t suppose you like vegemite either?!? Tanyas lamingtons sound good! But nevertheless happy thanksgiving to you, I love your pie decorations, very cute!

  12. the holiday season is upon us….whoa!
i like the idea of layering & will try this for my pumpkin pie… a good idea for other baking as well!
    thanks anna!
look forward to your holiday posts…but certainly no pressure from moi!

  13. I’ve been out of town but now that I’m back and have time to catch up on blog reading, you’re my first stop. So I can pretend you did post this on Pie Day. :) The praline layer sounds yummy. I don’t have a favorite pumpkin pie recipe but it sounds like I need one!

  14. Would you look at those beautiful pies!!
You do such good work, Miss Thimble and I greatly admire your pies. I would never cut little leaves and acorns out of pie crust. What patience you have. I think the praline layer under the pumpkin sounds scrumptch!
