Five on Friday

1. After my last post, local peep Jenny questioned how I could post without mentioning our snowfall this week — she knows how much I love the snow.  In my defense, when I posted, we didn’t have any snow on the ground yet and I’ve spent way too many forecasts getting excited over nothing.  But this time, those weathermen did not disappoint!  On Sunday we got 11″ of snow and on Wednesday (?) we got another 4″.  It’s beautiful and I’m in heaven!  Sadly, we’re expecting warmer temps and rain this Sunday — I hope it’s short-lived and we don’t lose too much of our “base” (as-if!)

2.  Just a little shout-out to the Auntlets!  How are you kids doing this month?  I’m a little behind, but hoping to kick it into gear this weekend to make the deadline for block 4 — only a week left!

Thimbleanna: The Aunts' Quilt

3.  Barb (you know, FUN Barb!) had trouble finding a quilt stencil for a LARGE baptist fan.  Sooo, she decided to have her own made.  She’s opened an etsy shop and I’m happy to say, I was one of her first customers!  ;-D  These stencils are beautiful — big and sturdy and I can’t wait until I can use them.

4.  I love Ted Talks and I recently listened to a fun one titled 10 Myths about Psychology: Debunked by Ben Ambridge.  I thought it was an interesting listen and one of my favorites was the one about learning styles.  Here’s what he says:

Learning styles are made up and are not supported by scientific evidence. So we know this because in tightly controlled experimental studies, when learners are given material to learn either in their preferred style or an opposite style, it makes no difference at all to the amount of information that they retain. And if you think about it for just a second, it’s just obvious that this has to be true. It’s obvious that the best presentation format depends not on you, but on what you’re trying to learn. Could you learn to drive a car, for example, just by listening to someone telling you what to do with no kinesthetic experience? Could you solve simultaneous equations by talking them through in your head and without writing them down? Could you revise for your architecture exams using interpretive dance if you’re a kinesthetic learner? No. What you need to do is match the material to be learned to the presentation format, not you.

So much for being a visual learner!  He talks about left-brained and right-brained too — go check it out if that sort of thing floats your boat.

(And because I like a picture with my bullets, here’s one of my knitting progress — I’m on to the sleeves.  I’m hoping I don’t regret that neon green choice — you’re going to be able to see me coming a mile away — I’ll look like I stuck my finger in a nuclear reactor socket ;-D!)

5. And finally, my sample spree order from Moda has finally arrived.  I have three fat quarter towers left:

Feed Company by Sweetwater
Ambleside by Brenda Riddle
Gardenvale by Jen Kingwell

Thimbleanna: Sample Spree

They’re all so beautiful — I tried not to fondle the fabrics too much while taking pictures. They’re in my etsy shop if you’re interested in having these fabrics a month or two before they’re released.

I’ve done a little fun sewing (key word being little!) and after I take a picture or two, I’ll be back to show you!  Have a great weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. beautiful snow – we have had only one little snow fall back in November – to be in the 60’s for the next 5 days I love that sweater and the colors are perfect.

  2. Your snow is beautiful :) We’ve not had any but a flurry or two but that’s fine with me! It’s going to be 60 tomorrow. Yippee!
Love your sweater. You are such a talented gal !

  3. A fun five it is. I love Colorado snow. It comes, it makes you stay inside – hopefully cozily, and then a day or two later, it is gone! I like your sweater colors, very fun!!

  4. Snow! ??So I’m going on a 5 day sewing retreat at the end of the month and I’m taking my Aunts stuff with me. Will at least get the pieced blocks caught up. Yay me!

  5. Love Ted Talks. Wind up chasing all sorts of ideas and thoughts and topics I never would have thought of because of that show.

  6. Oh snow, how I long for some !!! I’m at about the same stage on my 4th block but am now stuck as I can’t make up my mind what fabrics to use for the flowers. I’m not a fan of too scrappy, but I don’t want it to look too bland either. What to do??? BTW: I’m not totally convinced regarding the absence of learning styles!
