Chocolate Chip Cookie Wars

Gee Whiz. I guess I should write a post just to move those Happy Easter pictures into the past, huh? Not much going on around here to post about. It’s tax time you know. That means cleaning out files and wasting time looking for tax stuff. Yoyo production has slowed down as a result, but I’m gaining on the little devils. Yoyo Count: Yoyos: 290 Me: 578.

Thimbleanna: Chocolate Chip Cookies

In the meantime, how do you take your Chocolate Chip Cookies? Cake-y or Chewy? Regular or Jumbo? I’m not a huge Chocolate Chip Cookie fan (Oatmeal Raisin any day baby!), but I try to do my part to keep the Chocolate Chip Cookie lovers in the family happy. For years I’ve made a recipe that a friend gave me when the boys were in high school. She kept the sports teams happily supplied with after practice snacks. When she moved away I begged her to give me the recipe, you know, for the boys. She’s a sweetheart, and very kindly obliged. They’re tender and cake-y and almost everyone loves them.

But, a few people prefer chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and recently, I found a recipe that fit the chewy bill. Last time I made them, I made them regular size, but today, I made them jumbo sized. They’re a little more cakey in their jumbo form, but they’re still really good. (In other words, if you prefer them even more chewy, make the jumbo sized recipe, but scoop them into smaller cookies.)

In the event you’d like to experiment, here are the two Chocolate Chip Cookie recipes that we love. You’ll notice they’re almost the same recipe. A big difference in the cakey vs. chewy technique appears to be oven temperature.

Thimbleanna: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Regular Chocolate Chip Cookies

3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl and set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream butter, sugars and vanilla together. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour mixture to the butter mixture in thirds. Stir in chocolate chips.

Line 4 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop the cookie dough onto cookie sheets. Bake until cookies start to brown, 8 – 10 minutes. Makes 24 cookies.

Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies

1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter, sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla. Mix well and scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix into the creamed butter, scraping again. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop the cookie dough into 12 large (1/3 cup) mounds. Bake until cookies are flat and very light golden brown 15 – 20 minutes. Makes 12 jumbo cookies.

And here’s another bonus to the Jumbo cookie recipe:

It’s fun to stack them in the cookie jar!

  1. Hands down, chewy. With dark chocolate chips. YUM YUM! Even better? Chewy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with dark chocolate chips. Now I want cookies. Thanks for sharing the recipes, Anna! Maybe I’ll try and make a batch this week.

  2. Oh glory, not a good idea to click on your post and see such deliciousness when I am starving!

Mm, the WT is fighting the tax demons downstairs even as we speak…… because we spent time here and there in 2012 it is a little more demolish than usual :(

  3. Chocolate – my favorite subject. I leave out 1/2 cup of the flour in my recipe so the cookies turn out flatter and less cake-y, and I add another 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. Probably not good for the heart, but they keep me mellow. O.o

Our taxes are done. Thank. the. Lord.
    Have a wonderful week

  4. Oh my. I’d take either one…or both;) I’m with on on the oatmeal raisin cookies, my favorite. But if I am forced now and then to eat a chocolate chip cookie I will sacrifice.

  5. Yum!! I use the Nes-lay Too-louse recipe, and I use the tiny chocolate chips! I like that I can use the same amount of chocolate but it’s spread out more in the cookie :)

  6. Wow Anna, your pictures are so amazing!! They should be in a magazine! And I knew I liked you for a reason…Oatmeal Raisin are the BEST!!! But sadly, my kids aren’t big fans of the raisins, so we mostly stick to the chocolate chip around here. I’ll definitely be giving both of these a try. Thanks for sharing the recipes and your amazing pictures! Oh, and great job sticking with the yoyos!!

  7. Chewy! Mini chocolate chips and lots of big walnut pieces. Of course, no one else in my house likes them with nuts. I usually scoop out one or two cookies and stuff some walnuts in there. This way, everyone’s happy.

  8. Ok, you hit a nerve here! I found a unique chocolate chip cookie recipe just the other day and HAD to make them. Called for MELTING and BROWNING the butter! And using more brown sugar than white and using three TABLESPOONS of dough when putting them on the cookie sheet and undercooking them just a touch!! I thought I was making a big mistake but they were so buttery and melty and soft and gooey and BIG my son-in-law ate 5 of them in one evening. I don’t know how he did it, they were so big. My daughter thought they were restaurant cookies.
Next, I had to try some of the techniques on the good ol’ TollHouse recipe that’s embedded in my brain. I melted the butter. I used a little more brown sugar than white. I chilled the dough because it was a little too loose. The cookies were ok but not great. Flat (I want cakey), soft and spread out too far.
    Sigh.

  9. This is funny because we have this debate at my house all the time. My kids use the recipe called “the chewy” from Alton Brown. My husband likes to have the choc. chip with some oatmeal mixed in. I like the cakey one that is on the back of the choc chips. Weird that there are so many intense opinions on this subject!

  10. I’m a chocolate chip girl – love ’em, but try hard to resist ’em, cos I can’t stop at 1…or 2! I solved the “hunt for tax stuff” by buying a box and during the year AnyThing tax related Must Go In The Box. Then there’s no hunting come tax time – saves me each year!

  11. Nooooooo. Get away, you wicked temptress!

Actually, the giant ones reminded me of a bakery I used to go to when I was a student (and had a much faster metabolism) – the choc chip cookies there were fully 7 inches across and crunchy, and I can still taste them. Yum.

  12. chewy. chewy. chewy. and i, too, am a raving fan of oatmeal raisin. the best recipe i’ve found so far is from the JOY. we use fresh nutmeg in it and she/they have you chop the raisins first. they are soooo stinking good. have you tried them yet? i may have to make them for you one day. speaking of one day… are you getting excited?? i am.
    :waves more madly than usual

  13. Oh Yum!!! I love mine cake-y. I just made 3 different batches of cookies while helping my dil with the baby. I have to say I don’t have a cookie favorite, I LoVe them all!

  14. Those cookies look so good. We are still dieting at my house. So, unfortunately, no cookies for me. Candice posted a post on how she takes food pictures. It will be a weekly feature. I thought you might be interested. She has a new blog address candicestringhamphotography.com. I think that is it anyway. Your photography is already great but you might pick up something new.

  15. Chocolate chip is my all time favorite! And chewy is the preferred, although I am not too picky when it comes to chocolate chip cookies. LOL
Thanks for sharing the recipes, I look forward to trying them out, and (maybe) sharing the results with the family. :)

  16. Oh my those look delish! I love them chewy, although over all, it’s not my favorite cookie. But look how cute in your fancy jar!!

  17. Ooh! It’s been too long since I made any chocolate chip cookies! These pics have my mouth watering…And I’m thinking “Should I make some to take north to visit oldest son? Or should I just plan to bake some as soon as I land?” Thanks for the encouragement!

  18. I like ’em chewy and not too big.

    Regular sized. :-)

    With lots of chocolate chips.

    And white chocolate chips.

And maybe even some peanut butter.

You can keep the oatmeal raisin.

And I love the Gee Whiz. :-)

  19. They both look yummy, but when you make them big, you can be honest and say you’ve “only had 1 or 2 cookies, that’s all.” My recipe has oats, coconut, and maybe some pecans, mm-mm….
    :-}pokey

  20. Hi Anna, I am back in the world of the living – for now anyways. Trying to lose the poundage acquired during my trip to Baja, ahem…. way too many margaritas! I am definitely the chewy cookie person – I LOVE chewy chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin. Considering I don’t like deserts, that means I really love cookies to eat them.

  21. we are big cc fans at our house! I like them crisp and even a little dark. My husband likes them a little chewy.
So, you don’t chill your dough before backing. I’ve had trouble with butter based cookies getting too flat and not doughy enough.
Now I want to make cookies lol

  22. Oh no! More tasty recipes! I’d better not let the not-so-little Lockets see this post or I will be forced to eat delicious cookies – entirely against my will you understand?!
