Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

All you regulars out there know that I love to travel. I’ve always been envious of people who live in really cool places where they can house swap — what a way to see the world! The problem is, I don’t have anything to swap. I certainly have a nice enough house to swap, but I don’t live in an exciting place. No mountains or ocean views here in the midwest. Although, if you’re into corn fields or Amish buggies, we’ll see if we can work a deal (ok, we do have a pretty cool little Children’s Zoo, a historic Fort, and Johnny Appleseed’s gravesite, but I’m thinking that’s not enough to entice a foreign visitor!)

If you were to have occasion to visit our boring quiet little burg, this might be the week to do it. Every summer, we have a 10-day festival and it started today.  The first day is my favorite day.  I start off with Antiques in the Park:

Anyone remember Jarts?  They only sold them for a few years before they were deemed unsafe.  We had some fun summers playing this game when I was a kid — and didn’t even kill anyone.

And oh man, I really wanted this little doll baby bottle sterilizer set — look how cute!

After Antiques in the Park, I moved downtown to Art in the Park:

And then, all that walking around required a visit to Junk Food Alley and the midway.

It was fun to watch all the little kids playing arcade games.  If I were playing, I’d definitely want to win one of those Hello Kitties.  I’m way out of touch though — all the little girls were crazy for those cute pink dolphins.

And, of course, I couldn’t leave without my yearly funnel cake.  Yum, Yum!!!

On that note, I’m going to go sleep off my sugar-high. Hope you’re having a fun weekend!

XOXO,
Anna

  1. I am holding out for the deep fried cookie dough at the Fair this year. It looks like a very fun day Anna!

  2. My oldest daughter loved Hello Kitty with a passion util she was about 7. When we lived in San Francisco we went by a Sanrio store on our bus route, and she could not be distracted ever. Please, pull ease can we go to the Hello Kity store? PLULESSSSSE!” I came to “hate” Hello Kitty. Haha. Normally, she was a pleasant soft spoken child. I don’t however hate funnel cakes. How could you limit yourself to just one yearly?

  3. looks like lots of fun! junk food alley oh my.

I’d come. it’s the corn fields you see. according to the movies they are filled with xfile worthy mysteries, aliens and ghost baseball players.

  4. The problem with swapping is that we wouldn’t be able to hang out with you. But this celebration looks fun. We have lots of options outside our nation’s capital for adventure. Come on over!

  5. What a great time!!! And it looks like the weather was good, I love the Farmland Jazz Band. I’ll bet they were great. And I’m with you, I would go for the Hello Kitty prize. Yay for the yearly funnel cake! I have to wait till the Sandwich County Fair at the end of summer for mine, something to look forward to :o)

  6. LOL – oh so know what you mean about a (boring) quilt little midwest place – here if I traded – the person(s) would be able to take a drive to three state parks that are pretty but unless you are into hiking at high humidity and heat that would be out until fall, fishing if you fish – driving up into the Ozark Mt. to see the view except again it is hot and humid – no exciting museums to see here – not much in the historic line either unless you drive over an hour to the city – I sometimes wonder what visitors that come to our area see that I do not see in it? I sometimes think we get bored with out own place because we have seen it all so long but to new comers it is all interest and different from what they have?

  7. How fun! I’ll trade houses with you someday, when my house is up to par! I do remember Jarts, we had those but I didn’t know the name. Beautiful pics, Anna.

  8. I don’t know what funnel cake is …… but is looks decidedly naughty, so I’ll have some please!!

  9. You’ve opened my eyes to new things today, I’d never heard of Jarts or funnel cake. It great to see you out and about having a colourful good time!

  10. That looks like so much fun! Would you believe I’ve never eaten a funnel cake? Oh, I’ve seen them, but never tasted one. We have an Italian Festival (The Feast Of St. Ann) coming up at the end of the month. Maybe I should give one of those a try.

  11. I’ve never heard of jarts or funnel cake either.

Re your comment about my non-knitting – what was it you said about (I’ve forgotten now)the NI picture or something? I have to concentrate too hard to knit and have forgotten how to pick up dropped stitches – used to know. Maybe in my 70s…

  12. Oh my goodness, seeing that box of jarts brought back sooooo many memories. I had to laugh, it really is a miracle that no one I knew ever got seriously hurt or killed playing that game. I do remember someone getting hit in the foot with the Jart, they were standing too close to the ring and the one throwing the jart did NOT have a good aim. If I remember right that ended the game with the parents of the injured kid deciding that game was too dangerous. I never could figure out why we had to quit, when they had brought the game..LOL

  13. Wow! I wouldn’t call your town boring! You ought to stop by my place. Don’t blink, cuz you’ll miss it. No zoo here, unless you call a few cows in a pasture zooish! We don’t even have a water fountain let a lone historic grave sites! Well, maybe historic to people from this area. Everyone is related except us. Thanks for the tour! Wanna trade? I do own a sweet quilt shop! ;0)

  14. festivals are my FAVORITE thing! Love those food (treat) trucks :)
I love to have a stay-cation around home – in fact I did that yesterday.
Looks like a great antique show. I can see why you like the baby bottle sterilizer – so cute.
We had jarts too! We are life twins :)

  15. Loved seeing these pictures…so full of atmosphere and the fun of the fair! And I loved the baby bottle sterilizer too….those wonderful little old-style bottles :) Hadn’t heard of funnel cake before…and sadly (or maybe luckily) we missed out on the exciting game of jarts over here!

  16. I think it would be exciting just to visit another part of the world, I have only been to the US a couple of times and would love to visit more of it and where you live looks very pretty. I am lucky to live in a village that lots of people do visit and it is the trade that has kept lots of our shops open and means that we have nice places to eat and drink and the practical stuff like transport and food shops.

  17. How cool! I never visit my local stuff, but, after just having spent a week on the road going through IA, to MO, thru KS, to CO, to WY, to SD, and finally back home to MN, I was very happy to see my own state’s scenery again. Living amongst lots of lakes and cute little farms make me just as happy as seeing all the big rolling hills, humongous ranches, and mountains. Thanks for sharing all the pretty pix with us!
