Spring Market Report 2011: The Fabric

Lucky for you, this is my last market report — my apologies to those of you who are sick of hearing about market.  I thought you might like to see a little of the fabric side of market.  Before the fabric report though, I wanted to clarify my comments about the butt-ugly car from my last post.  I had a comment from Deb, saying how much they love their Cube.  The Gulls and I actually loved the Cube too.  It’s zippy, gets great gas mileage and has a ton of room inside.  It was awesome for hauling around all the market stuff.  We just thought it was a little funny looking, thus the nickname LOL!

So, now, for fabric.  I had two fabric “missions” for market.  I REALLY wanted to see Sarah Jane’s new line of fabric, and I did.  It’s just adorable, and it’s moved to the top of my wanty list.  If there had been Sarah Jane fat quarter bundles at sample spree, I would have bought them.  I love that cute little hopscotch print.

Market fabric

My other mission was to see the new Ghastlies print.  I managed to make it to the Alexander Henry booth on the last day of market and I asked about the Ghastlies.  They’re reissuing all of the old prints and there’s a new print that’s super cute.  It’s a lot like the main print from the first line — there are several groupings of Ghastlie people doing different things.  And to tell you the truth, I can’t remember what any of them were doing ’cause I only had eyes for one little group of women.  They were knitting.  Ghastlie Women (Witches? I can’t remember, all I could see was the knitting) Knitting!!!  I can’t wait until they start shipping! (Sorry, I didn’t even get a picture.)

As for any other fabric, I went to Sample Spree intending to be well-behaved and not really get anything.  And then someone walked by with the Moda Market bag.  If you buy something worth $20 dollars from the Moda table, you get a free market bag.

Market fabric

I mean, c’mon!  How could a girl originally from Utah be expected to pass THIS up?  I. Had. to. Have. It!  So, I slipped in between the wild crowd and grabbed the easiest pack of fat quarters that I could get, just to get the bag.  Such a sacrifice, huh?  Ruby — isn’t she pretty???

Market fabric

And ok, I slipped up and bought another fabric pack.  I couldn’t resist Monica’s Mochi Mochi Yum Yum.  The poster on Pinterest sucked me in.

So, that’s the end of market reporting from here.  Oh how I wish we could do it all again!

Spring Market Report 2011: The Gulls

Wait.  Before I tell you about The Gulls …  as predicted, I forgot someone(s) from market.  I had a great time meeting The Quilt Taffy girls (Corrie and Des) when they came to Kellie’s booth.  These two sisters are pretty darn funny and I was so excited when I saw their nametags and realized who they were.  I love their blog — they’re the most generous bloggers I know — they’re always having fabric giveaways.  And no, I didn’t get a picture, so, yes, I shamelessly stole this one from their market report post.

Market

Ok, on to The. Gulls.  I picked them up from the airport on Monday afternoon and they hit the ground running.  24 hours of travel had nothing on these two.  As is tradition, we went to Target first.  Computers are a novelty down under, so here they are checking out the tech aisle.  JUST KIDDING.  I don’t really know what they’re looking at — we spend a lot of time teasing each other about our two countries, so it seemed like a good comment for this aisle.

Market

The Gulls were quite well behaved, on this, their third market with me.  Very little translation services were needed this time.  There were still a few people who didn’t know what Roar-edge applique is and one woman answered “by plane” when Kellie asked her “how you going” (which means how are you doing) — hysterical!

After Target, we went to Anthropoligie.  I’m taking a break here to show you the anthro displays — they’re always so cool.  Check out the fishing net.  Can you tell what it is?  (Hint:  stained wooden clothespins.)

Market

And here’s the checkout counter.  Not sure how I feel about destroying these antique dressers, but embedding them in concrete is certainly original.

Market

On Tuesday, we ran lots of errands to get stuff for the booth.   Once back at the hotel, we were lucky enough to find some shopping carts in the parking garage.  So, what are desperate girls tired of carrying boxes to do?  We brought the shopping carts into our hotel room.

Market

We also ran to the bank so Kellie could exchange some money.  We got there just at closing and they couldn’t use Kellie’s bank card inside the bank, and by the time we went out to the machine, the lobby was closed, so we had to go through the drive-thru line too (to get change for sample spree).  Now apparently, they don’t have drive-thru banking down under (ok, this time I’m not making it up — what’s up with that?  — it seems there aren’t drive-thru pharmacies either — a certain little aussie pharmacist finds our drive-thru pharmacies a little shocking) so I made Kellie and Jan take their car through the ATM line while my car was in the teller line.  Here they are in their car — Kellie giving me the evil eye and Jan in the passenger seat.  I think the real confusion was caused by the fact that the driver’s seat is on the left hand side of the car.  (And, btw, you may hear some rumors about my driving, but don’t. you. believe. them.)

Market

Speaking of cars, here’s our rental car — affectionately known as the butt-ugly car.  (No offense if this is what YOU drive!)

Market

Notice the camera on the car?  On Wednesday morning Jan and I drove up to Park City and had a fantastic time surrounded by beautiful scenery.  I set the camera up on the car so that I could get a picture of the two of us at .

Market

Jan was a great sport at the ski resort.  I was going to have her make a snow angel, but instead, we settled on throwing a snowball.  (They don’t have snow in Australia either.  ;-D)

Market

As I mentioned last time, I’d had big plans for us to hike Timp.  When that didn’t work out, the default plan was to ride the tram at Snowbird.  As luck would have it, the tram was closed for maintenance.  The goal was to go up into the mountains though, and we had such a great time at Park City.  We picked up some deli sandwiches and drove as high up as we could go before the road was closed.  Then we found a little impromptu picnic place.  It was gorgeous, even if we were eating on a guard rail.

Market

On the way back down to Salt Lake, we found a bunch of trees growing shoes, so, of course, we had to take some pictures.  Is there anyone local who knows what’s going on with these trees?

Market

So, that took us to Wednesday afternoon, when market set-up started.  After that, it’s a big blur except for meeting people when they came by the booth.  I was very sorry to have missed the big blogger party on Saturday night, but I had a good excuse.  We went to the Riley Blake party, where they announced that Kellie will be joining the Riley Blake team.  Yipee!  (They also announced that Carina Gardner will be joining the team — Carina teaches some wonderful Illustrator classes at JessicaSprague.com — she’s a great instructor and I can’t wait to see her new fabric creations.)

Anyway, the Riley Blake party was an 80’s themed party.  Do you recognize these two gulls?

Market

Kellie was the brainchild behind our Devo (Devo who?) costumes.  We didn’t win the Best Costume award.  I know.  I couldn’t believe it either.  Clearly, it was rigged.

Market

It’s ok though, we knew we were winners.  We even wore our costumes later that night for storytime.

Market

So.  That was the quick (ha!) round-up of another market with The Gulls.  Thanks for sticking with it to the end.  We had a fantastic time — lots of laughter and lots of fun.  Everyone needs some gulls for semi-annual entertainment!  I’ll leave you with a picture of The Gulls in front of the gorgeous flowers at Temple Square.  We managed to sneak in a quick visit one night just before sundown.

Spring Market Report 2011: The People

Sheesh — I can’t even manage to get a few market reports together this week. It’s been really busy here. My beloved Aunt Annie has been here all week and we’ve been playing and eating. She even made her famous sweet rolls today — I’m stuffed! I’m hoping to get back to a more normal this week — reading blogs and answering e-mails.

So. Spring Market. It was SOOO fun. Of course, being from Utah, I could be a little biased. I sure wish Quilts, Inc. would hold every fall market in Salt Lake and put Houston on the spring rotation. No offense to you Houston friends, but just look. Mountains. Check out this beauty —

Market

Can you top that??? That’s a shot of Mount Timpanogos from the airplane as we flew into Salt Lake City. I had big plans of hiking the back side of Timp with The Gulls, but doh! I forgot about the snow! You can hike right across that gorgeous ridge and it’s super fun.

Ok.  So, it felt like we hit the ground running.  The first few days are always all about booth set up and sample spree.  Here’s a shot of Jan at the Don’t Look Now table at sample spree.  We were only a row away from the Moda tables.  See those stacks of fat quarter packs behind her?  That’s the moda booth during set up.

Market

And this was the Moda booth after they let the crowds in.  It was cah-razy.  Like a bunch of locusts who swarmed in and cleaned all that fabric off of the tables.

Market

The day after sample spree, market starts.  We had a great location this year — we were kitty (ha!) corner from Holly and Pam Kitty Morning and Elizabeth.  Three whole days and did I get a picture?  Nooooo.  But I did have a good time asking Pam each morning if she was having a Pam Kitty Morning.  She always gave me an enthusiastic thumbs up.  Her new fabric is ADORABLE.  Pam cracked me up during clean up when I ran into her in the lobby.  She was carrying 4 chairs out to their trailer and she looked at me.  “Not a Pam Kitty Morning” she said.  Too funny!

Here’s a shot of our booth.  Kellie had five new patterns this time, so she decided to put mini-beds in the booth, as the wall space was in short supply.  I met tons of blogger friends for the first time at market, and topping the list was sweet Denice who provided props for the booth.  Denice is amazing and I was lucky enough to be able to meet her at her home, surrounded be several of her cute children.  Thanks for all of your help Denice — I really wish we’d had more time to visit!

Market

That’s the hardest part of market for me — we’re always so busy in the booth, I don’t get much time to sneak out and take pictures. And even less time to visit with friends.  Luckily, lots of blogger friends came by the booth. I loved meeting Nanette and Shelby (oh to have more time to quilt and play together!),  Kristyne, Amber, Sherri, Lori, Vanessa, Kim — and I’m sure I’m forgetting several others. Last time I forgot about Sharon. No forgetting her this time — we were stalking each other on the first day of market. And I ran into Ms. Farmhouse while I was on a coffee run for the Gulls — we’d been standing next to each other in line for a few minutes before we even realized what was going on.  And, as you’ll notice — I didn’t get any pictures of any of the above.  What a sorry excuse for a blogger!  I was so sorry to have missed the big blogger party on Saturday night — everyone said they had such a wonderful time and it would have been so fun just to have some time to visit with everyone.

Anyway, on the few moments that I managed to escape from the booth, I took a few pictures.  LOVE that giant prince charming from Tula Pink!

Market

And can someone please remind me who’s pretty booth this is?  I loved the colors.

Market

Bonnie and Camille’s booth is always so pretty.  It was super fun to see the famous polka dotted rocker back in the corner behind Camille.

Market

Sigh. Swoon. Sarah Jane — new designer for Michael Miller. More on her in a later post.

Market

The Sweetwater booth — it was hard to get a good photo as it was crowded when I was there.

Market

Riley Blake.  Oh how I want that bike!

Market

Lori’s new Sew Cherry line for Riley Blake.  Yummy!

Market

The Basic Grey booth — or, rather one of the pictures in their booth.  Their booth was swamped when I was there too — SO cute!

Market

Jan taking a picture at The Quilted Fish booth.  They had SO much cute stuff — just look at that adorable upolstered chair up front!

Market

A close up of what Jan was zooming in on — aren’t those hats adorable?

Market

I liked this quilt in the United Notions booth.  Can anyone remember the name of the company that designed this quilt?  She had a darling booth with a cute pillow that I’d really like to make.

Market

And one other booth that I failed to get a picture of — the Jillilly studio booth — it was fantastic– you can see it on her blog.  Her niece stopped in the Don’t Look Now booth and she mentioned that they were serving sorbet — I may or may not have beat her back to her booth for a little treat.  If only I’d known that The Quilted Fish was serving cupcakes on the first day LOL!!!

Sorry to have kept you for so long….next up will be the Gulls.  They were once again in fine form!!!
XOXO,
Anna

A Horse Report

I had a fabulous time at market — it was so much fun. I’m going to make you wait one more post though, before I start the market reports. Before market, I went to my parents’ hometown and visited my aunt and cousins for the weekend and had the most exciting time.

On Saturday, we toured my cousin’s new house and got to meet some of her horses.  I always love to see the horses and farm animals, since I’m a city slicker.  Look at this beauty —

Horse

I can’t remember her name, but see that big belly?  There’s a baby horse in there!  I asked my uncle lots of questions about horses and babies.  You know…things like, how do you know when a horse is getting close to foaling?  He said the mare will get wax on her nipples.  Or how do you know when it’s “time”?  I remember the phrase “when the wax starts dripping, it will be three hours.”  I was really fascinated by that fact — do people actually sit around and time these things?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Here’s another pretty horse that was at an old barn that belonged to my uncle’s father.  This is Strawberry — I think they told me he’s a one year old colt.

Horse

Oh, and here’s a shot of what’s left of the old barn.

Horse

On Sunday evening (around 8 p.m.), after a fun day of visiting with lots of cousins, my aunt, cousin’s daughter and I were playing cards, and my cousin called several times to talk to my uncle.  It was pouring rain and they were worried about the pregnant mare and they were debating whether to move her.  She thought maybe the “wax was dripping”.   They finally moved her to the barn in the picture above (a half-a-town (technical distance) away).

Around 10 p.m., my uncle wanted to know if anyone wanted to ride with him to go to the next town, to my cousin’s and check on the horse.  I really debated, because I was leaving for Salt Lake and market early the next morning.  But I kept thinking, what if I miss something exciting?

On the way there, we called my cousin and she said they’d moved the horse and she was getting cozy in her new barn and that I really should stay an extra day, since they felt certain that the  little foal would be born on Monday.  So, we went to her house and played a game for an hour.  On our way home, we decided we should check in on the mare.  It was 11 p.m., drizzling and dark.  When we pulled up to the barn, Strawberry was standing near the door pictured above, but his head was in the barn.  I jokingly told my uncle that “something must be going on in there and Stawberry is watching”.  We had a good chuckle.

My uncle, cousin, cousin’s daughter and I got up to the door and they pointed their flashlights into the barn.  HOLY COW!!!  The mare was lying down and heaving and the whole process was just starting.  Our timing was PERFECT.  You have to imagine the four of us crowded around that little door in the dark, watching the whole thing with two flashlights and whispering.  It. Was. Amazing!!!

Horse

Strawberry was less than impressed that we had crowded him out of his viewing spot, so he spent the  whole time nibbling at the back of our heads.  Before we knew it, the little foal plopped right out.  The mare didn’t pay much attention to her, so my uncle stepped in for a moment and cut the amniotic sack away from her face so she could breathe.  It  took the mare quite awhile to pay attention to her new baby.  My uncle thought that might have been because she was pretty tired and had had a bit of a struggle.  My cousin got some great photos — my camera refused to cooperate in the low light, as it couldn’t find a focus point.

Horse

The picture above is the only decent shot I got — that’s pretty much what  our view looked like the whole time — a flashlight shining on the event.  The mare finally got up to inspect her little foal and we decided we should leave them alone, so we didn’t get to see her stand up.

Horse

I met my cousin at the barn early the next morning  to see them again before I left town — I was SO excited!  Isn’t she cute?  She was all wobbly legged — just 8 hours old in the picture above.  I left not knowing if it was a little filly or a colt, but the next day, my cousin sent me the picture below to say she was a filly.

Horse

So, sorry I’ve made you wait for the market report, but really — this was the most exciting part of my trip!  I had a great time at market, but Watching a Foal Be Born.  What an honor!!!  And did you catch the timeline?  My cousin called at 8 p.m. and said the wax was dripping and the foal was born at 11 p.m. — apparently my uncle is a horse genius.  And on top of it all — it was Mother’s Day!!!

XOXO,
Anna

See Ya Later Alligator

Yipee!  It’s time for me to take my little breaky break break for spring market.  TheManoftheHouse is going to be brave and hold down the fort here while I get to go have fun with the Gulls.  I leave in the morning and I’ll be gone for about 10 days ’cause I plan to take a little extra time and visit family and PLAY.  Sadly, I won’t appear on PKM radio as I don’t blog while I’m gone.  I don’t have an iPad and I don’t want to have to worry about a laptop (I think I’ve mentioned that I had one stolen on a trip once and I’m scarred for life!)   I’ll take lots of pictures though, and there will be LOTS to report when I return.

Before I go, I wanted to pass on a very exciting tidbit.  A few weeks ago, Susan who blogs at Fort Worth Fabric Studio contacted me and asked if they could use the pictures of my Ghastlies quilts for an upcoming post.  That post is up now and guess what GUESS WHAT????

Scavenger Hunt Photo

Eeeeek!!! How exciting!!! I’m hoping to see the new prints at market.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go ogle the Miss Airport 2011 calendar and decide which pose will be most appropriate for me tomorrow when I go through the airport scanner!

Scavenger Hunt Photo

Behave yourselves while I’m gone — I hope you’ll save all of your exciting posts for when I get back!
